Player Analysis: Team Columbia from the Top Prospect Games

Previously, we release the complete statistical analysis from the 2013 Top Prospect Games. 

+ Alec McCurry, C, Olentangy Orange HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 175-pound catcher with solid frame. Registered a 7.26 60-yard dash. He reached a top velocity of 76 mph from the crouch. Needs to improve footwork and direction, which will help aid his accuracy. Pop times sat between 2.04 to 2.11. Also worked out at second base. May be his best position at the next level. Shows good lateral movement, short arm action, and a quick transfer on his throws. At the plate, he uses a small leg kick. Load can get long at times. Shows obvious strength in his hands with 93 mph exit velocity off the tee. Pull power in his swing.

+ Chace Culver, RHP, Wapakoneta HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with thin, athletic frame. Uses long, loose arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires regular effort. Tends to sit over his back side. Velocity should increase as he speeds up his lower half. Fastball sat 80-82 mph with straight action. Breaking ball sat at 65-66 mph with gradual 11/5 break. Showed good command of a 72-73 mph change with fade thrown near fastball arm speed.

+ Charlie Watters, 3B/RHP, Columbus Academy HS, 2014

6-foot-5, 218-pound two-way prospect with big, physical build. Registered a 7.24 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a first baseman at the next level. Shows good hands, but needs to continue improving lateral quickness for left side of the infield. Switch hitter that tarts with tall, open stance from each side. Hits most natural from the right-side with quick hands (85 mph exit velocity off the tee). Shows slight uphill path. Potential to be middle of the order bat at the next level.

+ Chris Machamer, IF/RHP, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2016

6-foot-1, 178-pound two-way prospect with big time potential. May have been the top player at the 2013 Top Prospect Games. It is difficult to determine his position at the next level as he shows well in all areas of the game. On the mound, the righty uses a quiet, repeatable delivery. He throws with quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sat 86-88 mph and ran up to 90 mph on occasion. He also used a 70 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 break. He also showed a straight 72 mph changeup. In the field, he shows smooth, fluid actions. Takes good angles to the ball. Looks advanced for his age. Shows softness in his hands and a quick transfer. At the plate, he uses a balanced setup. Features a simple load with little wasted movement. Bat stays through the zone with uphill path. Truly hits the ball gap-to-gap. Surprising power at his age, which will only get better as he physically matures.

+ Colton Carney, OF, Brecksville Broadview Heights HS 2014

6-foot-4, 195-pound outfielder with tall, athletic frame. Registered a 6.99 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he tends to throw uphill with effort. Registered a top velocity of 79 mph on his throws. His best tool is his bat. Starts with a tall, balanced stance. Tendency to bar his arm in his load. Uses short stride. Displays a repeatable swing. Gap-to-gap type production. Registered 78 mph exit velocity off the tee. 

+ Connor Regan, C/RHP, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect with big, solid frame. Registered a 7.5 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he shows short arm action and accuracy on his throws. Reached a top velocity of 79 mph from the crouch. His pop times ranged between 2.00-2.14. Tends to get tall early out of the crouch with his transfer. Should only get better as he gets more comfortable behind the plate. Offensively, he hits from the right side. Shows a balanced setup with good use of his lower half. Takes short, slight uphill path to the ball. Definite pull power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 87 mph off the tee.

+ Connor Thomson, C/2B, Canton South HS, 2014

5-foot-9, 160-pound prospect with small, athletic build. Registered a 6.85 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he registered a top velocity of 77 mph from the crouch with long arm action. His pop times sat between 1.97-2.09. He will only get better as he cleans up the hitch in his transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter projects as a top of the order bat. He uses a short stride and simple load. Shows a repeatable swing. Stays inside the baseball and use the whole field. Line drive type production.

+ Damien Richard, IF/OF, Versailles HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect with tall, athletic build. Registered 6.79 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action from over the top arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph on his throws. At the plate, he starts with a wide, crouched setup. Uses a short stride. Takes level path to the ball.  Shows some quickness in his hands. Registered top exit velocity of 86 mph off the tee.

+ Dan Kirchner, IF/OF, Olentangy Liberty HS, 2014

5-foot-9, 160-pound prospect with small, athletic frame. Registered a 7.00 60-yard dash. Likely projects as an outfielder or second baseman at the next level. Shows good footwork in the outfield. Needs to shorten transfer. Shows good carry on his throws with top velocity of 83 mph. In the infield, he shows a quick transfer. Tends to throw downhill from high ¾ to over the top slot. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts slightly open stance and hunched over. Swing is quick in and out of the zone with uphill path. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee.

+ David Lemasters, RHP, Lakeview HS, 2014

6-foot, 150-pound right-handed pitcher with average, athletic frame. Uses short arm action and above average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sat 84-87 mph and reached up to 88 mph. Showed good command of a late breaking 67-69 mph breaking ball. Also uses a 73-75 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed with some fade to it. Draws comparisons to Centerville 2013 RHP Brian Mroz, who signed with Eastern Kentucky.

+ Gus Graham, RHP, Gallia Academy HS, 2014

6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses slow tempo. Needs to speed up his delivery. Fastball shows slight run at 85-86 mph. Used a 73-74 breaking ball with some depth to it. Also showed good arm action on a straight 76-78 mph changeup.

+ Josh Armbruster, RHP/1B, Brecksville Broadview Heights HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect with big, physical build. Likely projects as a pitcher at the next level. Uses long arm action with quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 84-85 mph. Upper body type with more velocity to come as he better incorporates his lower half. Uses a 69-70 mph breaking ball with late 11/5 action. In At the plate, he doesn’t use a stride. Uses big upper half load. Takes a short, level path to the ball. Line drive type production. Registered a top exit velocity of 85 off the tee and a 7.78 60-yard dash.

+ Justin Childers, IF, Pickerington North HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 195-pound infielder with solid, athletic frame. Registered a 6.92 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a third baseman at the next level. Shows good baseball IQ. Shows good reactions in the field. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with top velocity of 78 mph. Transfer can get a tad long at times. At the plate, Childers uses an aggressive approach. Takes a flat, level path to the ball. Line drive type production. Registered top exit velocity of 92 mph. Tends to get heavy on his front side. Plenty of potential and power left to come.

+ Kevin Zullo, RHP, Hudson HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Uses average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Upper body type pitcher with more to come as he better incorporates lower half. Tends to swing the lower half open. Fastball is straight at 77-79 mph and he shows good command of a 66-69 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 action.

+ Kyle Casserly, OF/1B, Pickerington Central HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect with tall, athletic frame. Committed to West Virginia shortly after the Top Prospect Games. Registered a 6.64 60-yard dash. From the outfield, he shows short arm action through over the top arm slot with accuracy on his throws. Reached a top velocity of 88 mph. Likely a corner outfield type or first baseman at the next level. At the plate, the left-handed hitter uses a short stride and smooth load. Registered top exit velocity of 90 mph off the tee. Takes uphill path to the ball. Definite pull power in his swing. 

+ Lee Solomon, IF, Columbus Academy HS, 2014

5-foot-9, 185-pound prospect with impressive, physical build. Registered a 6.94 60-yard dash. Projects as a second base type at the next level. Uses short arm action and shows some fluidity in his work. Needs to continue improving transfer. Reached top velocity of 75 mph across the infield. At the plate, he has a balanced setup with a smooth load. Consistently squares up the baseball with good power for his size. Registered top exit velocity of 83 mph of the tee. 

+ Logan Giddings, RHP/1B/OF, Pickerington HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 195-pound versatile prospect with athletic build. Registered a 7.06 60-yard dash. Shows the skill set to play a corner outfield or first base at the next level. Looks comfortable in the outfield.  Takes good path to the ball. Showed carry on his throws with top velocity of 84 mph. At first base, he shows good footwork and natural actions. Bounces off the bag well. At the plate, the left-handed hitter drove the ball to all fields. Used a slightly open setup. Displays a quiet, simple swing with good bat speed (92 mph exit velocity off the tee). Gets good extension. Shows pull power in his swing. On the mound, the righty sat 81-83 mph with some run to his fastball. Uses short arm action and quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Throws a 74-75 mph breaking ball with late 11/5 break and a straight 76-79 mph changeup.

+ Matthew Machamer, 1B/OF, North Canton Hoover HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect with athletic frame. Registered a 6.77 60-yard dash. Shows the ability to be a corner outfielder, but likely a first baseman at the next level. Needs to improve arm strength to play the outfield in college. At the plate, the right0handed hitter starts with a narrow stance. Uses a short stride with good balance. Takes uphill path to the ball. Posted a top exit velocity of 89 mph off the tee.

+ Nanak Saran, RHP, Hudson HS, 2014

6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Shows average arm speed with short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Delivery requires regular effort. Still more to come with better use of his lower half. Fastball sat 81-82 mph with straight action. Showed command of a 67 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action. 

+ Perry DellaValle, RHP, Brecksville Broadview Heights HS, 2014

6-foot, 170-pound right-handed pitcher with solid frame. Shows quick arm speed with long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 84-86 mph with some arm side run. Uses a 70-72 mph breaking ball with late 11/5 action. Also throws a 75 mph changeup near fastball arm speed with similar movement to his fastball.

+ Ryan Fox, RHP, Centerville HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 185-pound righty with tall, athletic frame. Shows quick arm speed with long, loose arm action through high 3/4 arm slot. Looks like more velocity will come. Smooth rhythm to his delivery with easy effort. Fastball sits 79-82 mph. Rlies on a 67 mph breaking ball and a 75 mph changeup.

+ Will Marable, IF/RHP, Upper Arlington HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with thin, athletic build. Registered a 7.04 60-yard dash. In the infield, he projects as a middle infield type, likely a second baseman. Throws well from all angles and uses quick transfer. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph across the infield. At the plate, he hits from both sides. Showed stronger from the right side with more balance to his swing and a shorter path to the ball. Contact hitter from both sides that puts the ball in play. On the mound, the righty mixes arm angles, varying from a low ¾ to side arm slot. His fastball sat 75-77 mph from both slots while he showed a slurvy 11/5 breaking ball.
