Power 25 Ranking: Week 1

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA - Only one week in and there is plenty of movement among the Power 25, with three new teams coming into the ranking. The tournament season allows high school coaches to evaluate their clubs from top to bottom, with many playing six games in three days. In the first three weeks of the season, you can start to see pitching depth emerge, as well as a teams ability to score runs consistently, and clubs that simply “find a way” to win. Although ranking the Top 25 Teams in Texas is never going to be easy, our aim is to bring you the most comprehensive coverage with our “boots on the ground” scouting staff. Without further delay, here is the most up to date Power 25 Ranking.

Top 5

There were a couple of changes among the Top Five, but Colleyville Heritage remains at No. 1 with a 4-0 week. Same goes for Argyle, who took their show on the road to South Texas at the Border Olympics, remaining undefeated at 4-0. Lake Travis went 6-0 to move to No. 3 this week. Kingwood went 6-1 to move to No. 4 with a big win over then number five, The Woodlands. Coming in at No. 5 is Cypress Ranch, who went 4-1, their only loss coming at the hands of a late inning rally from George Ranch.

Moving Up

Georgetown went 6-0 with wins over Rockwall Heath, Lubbock Monterey, College Park, and Waco Midway. The depth of arms for the Eagles gives them a real shot at tallying up more wins over the next two weeks.

CC Moody, Frisco Lone Star, and Hutto all went 6-0 in week one, launching all three of those teams into the heart of the Power 25.

Frisco Lone Star has a really nice group of returners with quality starters on the mound, and some thunder in the lineup. The Rangers won five of their six games by 3 or more runs, and took an 8-7 win over Midland Lee to cap off a strong 6-0 week.

Hutto has been really young the past couple of years, but all those lumps they took in the past are starting to pay off. The Hippos went 6-0 this weekend, led by a strong junior class that includes 2020 1B/RHP Gage Boehm (Texas), and 2020 C Luke Banister. They won a one-run ballgame over Leander Rouse on opening day, then went 5-0 in the opening weekend of tournament play.

Who’s Out

South Grand Prairie and Plano Senior both dropped out of the ranking with 2-3 records, but don’t be surprised if both these clubs bounce back over the next couple of weeks. Wakeland also dropped out after going 3-2-1.

Bubble Teams to Watch

All Saints Episcopal is now 8-1 in private school ball, these guys have a nice group of returners and are led on the mound by the Speaker twins, Mason and Jacob.

A slew of other clubs has great starts to the season, including Lindale (4-0), Lubbock Cooper (5-0), Mansfield Legacy (5-0), Brenham (6-0), Denton Guyer (5-1), Prosper (5-1), and Joshua (4-0).
