Power 25 Update: Week 11

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

Last week’s Power 25 went virtually unchanged, but this week leads into the State Tournament with only 20 teams remaining in the four divisions. This week’s look at the Power 25 will also give a preview to the start of Tuesday’s state tournament in Appleton.

The No. 1 team in the state last week failed to make the final eight as Arrowhead lost the Sectional Championship to Milwaukee Reagan and one of the top 2016 arms in the state, RHP Alec Marsh. We should get to see Marsh again in the state tourney as the Huskies take on River Falls in the Quarterfinals.

As Arrowhead dropped to No. 2, Janesville Craig moved up to the No. 1 spot, winning their sectional and looking like the favorite in Appleton. Janesville Craig will take on Baraboo in their Quarterfinal matchup who made the final eight with a 22-6 record and make the Power 25 ranks at No. 20.

Rounding out the top five, No. 3 Bay Port and No. 4 Kimberly made the state tournament, West De Pere lost in the Sectional Championship to Kimberly after a marathon day for both teams. Bay Port’s quarterfinal opponent is No. 14 Oconomowoc, who won their sectional through Sun Prairie and Watertown. Kimberly’s first round opponent is the yo-yo Kenosha Indian Trail Hawks who have been up and down the Power 25 with impressive wins along the way including a mid-season win over then No. 1 Arrowhead.

Indian Trail improved to No. 12 and looks to have a young confident bunch heading into Appleton, a scary combination for opponents.

On the Division 2 side, none of the Power 25 teams made the final four. Notre Dame and Milwaukee Lutheran look to be the top two teams heading into semifinal play. Both teams played in tough conferences in the regular season that are filled with Division 1 teams so both are definitely battle tested and look to be the favorites. Milwaukee Lutheran comes in with a 17-13 record playing out of the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference. The Red Knights have the deepest pitching of the final Division 2 teams, led by Wisconsin-Milwaukee commit, junior LHP Nick Winter.

Both of the top Division 3 teams made the final for as No. 10 Aquinas and No. 13 Lake Country Lutheran advanced to Appleton. The Blugolds and Lightning are on different sides of the bracket and could face off in a much anticipated State Championship game.

Stay tuned to PBR Wisconsin twitter for all the updates during the State Tournament as we will be there for all the coverage.
