Pre-Season Underclass II: Class of 2013 Results

The Class of 2013 represented well at the second Pre-Season Underclass in Dayton. The field featured a mix of talented pitchers and position players with Defiance right-handed pitcher Robert Zeigler taking the Top Prospect honor. Videos will be uploaded in the coming days ...

1. Robert Zeigler, RHP, Defiance HS, 2013

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitcher has great physical projection in his body. Good repeatable delivery, has easy loose arm action with moderate arm speed through the 3/4 arm slot. Showed good stuff of all his pitches when he didn't try to "muscle up". Aggressive with FB, ranging 87-89 with late life in zone. Curveball was 73-75 mph with good downward tilt and some depth. Has good arm action on changeup, ranging 76-79 with some sink action. Currently Major D-1 to possible ML draft. Maintaining a successful line of Defiance pitchers. A top prospect in a pitching rich Ohio Class of 2013.
 
2. Nick Bertram, LHP, Centerville HS, 2013
Has a good athletic body on his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame. Repeats good delivery with quick arm through upper 3/4 slot. Has some shortness in backside side extension and wraps wrist. Shows good control of strike zone on all pitches. Is aggressive with fastball, ranging 83-85 mph with occasional cut action. Good pitchability and shows confidence in his off-speed stuff; a 12/6 tilt curveball with some depth (67-68 mph) and some sink action and good arm action on change, ranging 76-77 mph. D1 projection.
 
3. Andrew Zellner, OF/RHP, Valley View HS, 2013
Solid athletic prospect with physical projection on his 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame. Registered a 4.98 in the 40 yard dash (concrete surface).Defensively shows good range and hands accepting the ball. Shows some length in his 3/4 slot with an 84 across the diamond velocity. Offensively, the lefty hitter has upright stance with good load and bat speed, registering a bat velocity of 85 mph. Squares bat barrel on ball well with lower half torque. (Also RHP … didn't pitch in this showcase but was clocked in mid 80's summer of 2011). D1 projection.

4. Shawn Reid, RHP, Amherst, 2013
5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect with solid, muscular build. Uses quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Shows 85-87 mph fastball that gets on you quick. He shows command of a curveball that sits between 69-72 mph with sharp, late 11/5 breaking action. His changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and shows effective arm side run at 78-79 mph. While he doesn’t have much projection, he is a strike thrower with command of three solid pitches. Definite D1 follow.
 
5. Drew Nankivell, C, Grove City HS, 2013
One of the top athletes in showcase, ran exceptional 4.88 40 yard dash on concrete. Has strength in medium 5-foot-11, 185-pound body. Defensively shows good lateral movement and blocks well. Good release pop time (1.91-2.09 with 78 mph arm velocity). The righty bat hits from closed stance, has good load and excellent bat speed (88 bat velo). Makes solid contact. Needs to improve squaring up front side in swing to enhance lower half torque. High academic kid: 29 ACT and 3.74 GPA.

6. Jason Johnson, RHP, Dublin Jerome, 2013
6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect with tall, lanky frame. Uses a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with long, loose arm action. Shows four effective pitches. His fastball sits 82-84 mph with late run. Curveball shows slurvy type action with 11/5 late break as it registers 68-72 mph. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and sits at 76 mph with arm side run. Split-finger sits at 75 mph and shows good diving action down in the zone. Definite D1 follow (we have seen him in the mid to upper 80’s)

7. Masashi Sakamoto, OF/RHP, Dublin Jerome HS, 2013

Athletic body shows physical projection and good baseball sense as a potential two-shot prospect. Has good raw skills, ran a 5.1 second 40-yard dash on concrete. Defensively, has good range and hands with solid overtop extension on 88 mph throws. Has upright stance, has good load and directional bat path into zone with swing finish. Needs a little improvement in use of lower half torque. Likely projects as a pitcher at the next level. On the mound, he shows long arm action with quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Displays slow, smooth rhythm to his delivery. Fastball sits between 81-85 mph with late run. Curveball sits between 70-72 mph with late breaking 11/5 action. Forkball is thrown near fastball arm speed and sits at 70-71 mph with good diving action.

8. Todd Goldberg, LHP, Beachwood HS, 2013
Strong bodied 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame. Repeatable delivery with moderate arm speed through 3/4 slot. Has hesitation in middle of delivery. Gets arm extension on both front and backsides. Fastball shows some late life in zone, ranging 82-84 mph. Shows good control of off-speed curve and is aggressive with it, slurvy type tilt ranging 72-74 mph. Change is work in progress, sells arm action (67-68 mph) with some run. D-1 prospect.

9. Tommy Coon, 1B/RHP, Dublin Jerome HS, 2013
Strong stocky 6-foot-0, 215-pound body, not much projection. Offers two-shot ability. Excellent foot-speed for size (5.09 40 yd on concrete). Shows good defensive ability. Fields what he gets too with good hands and playable 77 mph across diamond throw. Balanced hitting stance. Gets good lower half in swing to project power. Has some length in swing (78 mph bat velo). On the mound, the right-hander uses quick, short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Uses quick rhythm to his delivery. Fastball sits at 81-85 mph with some sink. Curveball shows 12/6 late breaking action down in the zone. Split-finger sits at 68 mph and shows good diving action.
 
10. Bobby Paola, IF, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, 2013
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound infielder put himself on the map in this showcase with an excellent showing. Ran a good 5.14 40 yd dash on concrete, flashed solid defensive skills with good hands and lateral movement. Showed range and solid 80 mph throws from all angles. The lefty bat hits from open stance but squares front side. Good load and squares barrel on ball with bat speed (80 mph bat velocity). Line drive type hitter. Needs tweaking in enhancing lower half in swing. Mid-major middle infield prospect.
 
11. Sean Kennedy, IF, Springboro HS, 2013
Another of a line of good infielders who showcased their skills. Lean athletic 6'1" 165 body with room for increased physical strength. Excellent defensive skills, Good feet and soft hands with lateral range. Solid 80 mph arm strength from all angles. Good offensive skills who runs a 5.01 40 yd dash (concrete), Kennedy shows balanced stance with good hand load and directional bat path. Has bat speed (83 bat velo) into zone with lower half and finish. Base will occasionally creep out in front stride. Mid-major D-1 who plays all infield positions.

12. Derek Baker, 1B/LHP, Lakota East HS, 2013
Showcased as a two-shot player but I evaluate him at the next level as a good bat first baseman. Athletic 6-foot-1, 175-pound body with physical projection, ran a good 5.23 40-yard dash. Defensively, showed good lateral range and accepted ball well with playable 72 mph arm. Bat is his ticket. Stance with knees slightly bent with good load. Squares barrel on ball with bat speed (85 bat velo) and controlled upper-cut. Gets lower half torque and has projectable power. Can see possible LF ability with instruction.

13. Brady Ward, RHP, Miami Trace, 2013
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed pitcher with big, solid frame. Uses quick arm speed and short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 80-83 mph with some ASR. His curveball sits 71-72 mph and shows late, 12/6 break. His changeup shows potential as it sits 77-78 mph with some arm side fade.

14. Brock Frentzel, 1B, Gahanna-Lincoln HS, 2013
Strong 6-foot-3, 230-pound body. Moves very well for size (5.4 40 yd on concrete). Solid defensive action and shows quickness. Has good lateral feet and accepts ball very well. Has playable 70 mph arm strength across the diamond. Lefty bat shows upside, after making lower half adjustment, showed good lower body torque to enhance power. Good load and directional path with some upper cut. Has 80 mph bat velo. Kid shows aptitude, which states he still has a ceiling to reach on the next level.

15. Cameron Harris, 1B, Sycamore, 2013
6-foot-2, 245-pound prospect with big, solid frame. Registered a 5.69 40-yard dash time. In the field, he reached a top velocity of 66 mph. He needs to continue working on his footwork around the bag. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. He uses an explosive lower-half and quick bat speed to generate power to all fields. Generated 84 mph exit velo off the tee. He projects as a potential middle of the order D1 bat. 

16. Joe KeWeen, Catcher, Defiance HS, 2013
Medium athletic build. Shows good baseball sense. Ran 5.41 40-yard dash. Shows excellent defensive ski8lls, has lateral movement and blocks & accepts ball well. Good release (2.05-2.1 pop time with 73 mph arm velo). Is used to catching big arm at his high school. Shows good skills as a hitter (80 mph bat velo), Lefty bat has good load and barrel direction into zone. His good lower half torque will project some power on next level.
 
17. Steven Easterling, RHP/IF, Ironton HS, 2013
Smallish 5-foot-10, 165-pound body shows some baseball sense. Ran a 5.31 40-yard dash on concrete. Defensively, projects as 2B type with good hands and some range with some tweaking needed with his balance. Has good 77 mph arm velo across the diamond from all angles. Has good balance in stance, does tend to flatten hands in trigger, hence only 70 mph bat velo. Needs to improve his lower half in swing. Projects as RHP, has quick arm speed from 3/4 slot. Fastball ranges 82-84 mph. Curveball sits 62-65 mph with good, downward break. Changeup is thrown with good arm action and sits at 77-78 mph.

18. Addison Rospert, IF/RHP, Port Clinton, 2013
5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect with thin, athletic build. He fluid foot work and smooth actions in the field while reaching a top velocity of 82 mph from a high ¾ arm slot. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. He uses a smooth load and shows good balance. He takes a short, slightly uphill path to the ball while generate above average bat speed (86 mph exit velo off the tee). Definite follow with D1 athleticism.

19. Kyle Lento, IF/C, Dublin Jerome, 2013
5-foot-8, 168-pound prospect with small, muscular build. Very versatile with the ability to play several positions. Registered a 4.99 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. In the field, he shows smooth actions with fluid footwork, soft hands, and a quick, clean exchange. He reached a top velocity of 77 mph. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 75 mph with pop times ranging from 1.91 to 2.01. His throws were accurate and on the bag. At the plate, he starts with an open stance that causes issues with his lower half. He needs to square up the front side to maximize the use of his lower half. Still, he produces solid, line drive contact.

20. Peyton Ross, 3B, Gahanna Lincoln, 2013
6-foot-1, 210-pound prospect with big, solid build. Registered impressive 5.03 40-yard dash time for his size. Good athleticism, but likely projects as a first baseman at the next level. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride and compact swing. Displays explosive lower-half with excellent torque. Takes short, slightly uphill path to the ball that translates into big time power. Potential middle of the order bat at the next level.

Aaron Abrams, RHP/SS, Jackson, 2013
5-foot-9, 153-pound prospect. In the infield, he reached a top velocity of 74 acros the infield with a short, stiff throwing action through a high ¾ arm slot. He needs to continue to work on the fluidity of his footwork and softness of his hands. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. He takes a short, level path to the ball while generating decent bat speed (78 mph). Will improve his swing by squaring up front side and better incorporating lower-half. On the mound, the right-hander uses moderate arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits 77-79 mph. He lacks consistent command of his curveball, which sits 62-66 mph. He shows near fastball arm action on his 68 mph changeup.

Aaron Strausbaugh, SS/RHP, Dublin Scioto, 2013
5-foot-9, 158 pound prospect with average, athletic build. Registered a 4.94 40-yard dash on concrete surface. In the field, he shows average glove work and needs to continue improving his footwork as he tends to be flat at times. He uses a quick exchange and short arm action through a ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 73 mph. At the plate, the left-hander shows a smooth, fluid rhythm to his swing. He takes a short, level path to the ball that generates consistent line drives. On the mound, he uses a slow rhythm and moderate arm speed through a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot that generates a 75-77 mph fastball with late arm side run. His curveball has a small bite and sits at 66 mph. His changeup shows some arm side fade and sits at 66-67 mph, but he tends to slow down his arm action.

Adam Hartz, IF, Wynford, 2013
5-foot-10, 180-pound prospect with strong, athletic frame. At the next level, he likely projects as a third baseman. He uses a quick transfer and over the top arm slot to generate a top velocity of 72 mph across the infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a balanced setup with a short stride. He shows inside/out tendencies to his swing

Alexander Marques, RHP/3B, Fairborn, 2013
6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect with tall, lanky build. Registered a 5.39 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with an open stance. He generates decent bat speed (77 mph) with a short, uphill path to the ball. With his size and frame, he shows the potential for pull power, but needs to consistently close up his front side. On the mound, he uses short, quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits 76-78 mph and shows some ASR. His curveball shows a small bite and sits 64-66 mph. His changeup is straight and sits at 69-70 mph.

Andrew Dugal, LHP, Dublin Coffman, 2013
5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect with average, athletic build. Uses quick arm speed and long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits 76-78 mph. Curveball sits 62-64 mph and shows 1/7 breaking action. Changeup sits at 64-66 and shows some fade.

Austin Richey, RHP, Cincinnati Country Day, 2013
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with long and lanky frame. Uses moderate arm speed with long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits 72-76 mph. His curveball shows a small 11/5 break and sits at 68-69 mph. His changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and sits at 71 mph with arm side fade.

Ben Wewe, IF, Franklin County, 2013
6-foot, 170-pound prospect with solid frame. Registered a 4.88 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. Uses short, stiff arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 72 mph. Shows average hands and needs to improve the speed of his footwork. At the plate, the right-handed hitter sets up in slight crouch. Uses good balance and short, uphill path to the ball to produce a line drive swing with pull tendencies.

Bradley Cousino, C, Maumee, 2013
6-foot-1, 190-pound catcher with solid, thick frame. Registered a 5.40 40-yard dash time. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 70 mph and pop times ranging from 2.00 to 2.15. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a tall and narrow setup. His swing path tends to get flat. He will improve his power by better incorporating his lower half.

Brandon Wilson, 3B, Bellefontaine, 2013
6-foot, 175-pound prospect. In the field, he shows clean, short arm action with a top velocity of 74 mph. He shows athleticism and fluidity throughout his actions in the field. At the plate, he is a contact hitter that could improve his power by better incorporating his lower half into his swing.

Bryce Arledge, LHP, Unioto, 2013
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect is a big, solid left-handed pitcher. His fastball sits at 77-79 mph and shows some arm side run. His curveball sits at 65-66 mph. It shows some small, late breaking action and is thrown near fastball arm speed. He shows strong command of a 73-74 mph changeup that shows arm side sink. With a tall, broad frame, the left-hander can only get better as he gets stronger and adds velocity.

Bryce Curry, LHP, South Dearborn (IN), 2013
5-foot-8, 162-pound prospect with short, solid build. He uses quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball shows natural cutting action and sits 79-81 mph. His curveball shows good downward tilt and sits 66-68 mph, and his changeup some sink as it sits 69-71 mph.

Cal Johnson, OF, Anthony Wayne, 2013
5-foot-10, 180-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. Registered a 4.96 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 69 mph. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. He shows an uphill path to the ball with pull tendencies. He needs to work on keeping his bat through the zone longer.

Chandler Cole, OF, Upper Arlington, 2013
5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect with a solid, athletic build. Registered a 5.22 40-yard dash time. From the outfield, he consistently plays through the ball and reaches a top velocity of 76 mph using short arm action and a quick, clean transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance and uses his lower half to achieve good torque in his swing. He is a line drive hitter with the potential to be a gap-to-gap type guy. Interesting follow.

Chris Cline, OF, Logan Elm, 2013
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. Registered a 5.11 40-yard dash time. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter sets up in a slight crouch. He has a tendency to open his front side early, which leads to some bat drag. When he puts it together, he makes some solid contact.

Chris Raisanen, C, St. Edwards, 2013
6-foot-1, 188-pound prospect with thick, solid build. Registered a 5.29 40-yard dash time. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 70 mph with pop times ranging from 2.12 to 2.17. His throws tended to be accurate and on the bag. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows the foundation of a rotational swing. He shows quick bat speed (80 mph exit velo off the tee) and gap-to-gap power at the plate. Interesting following as he shows good athleticism for a catcher.

Danny Fenker, C, Turpin, 2013
5-foot-10, 210-pound prospect with short, thick build. Registered a 5.74 40-yard dash time. From the crouch, he reached a top velocity of 61 mph and his pop time fluctuated between 2.12-2.46 seconds. He needs to continue improve his footwork and accuracy. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with an open stance and using a strong lower-half to generate good torque. He displays a line drive type swing with power potential.

Derrick Brogdon, OF, Warren G. Harding, 2013
5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect with solid build. He registered a 4.97 40-yard dash. From the outfield, he uses long, stiff arm action through a ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 74 mph. At the plate, he is a contact type hitter. He starts with a balanced, athletic setup. Shows a flat, level path to the ball.

Drew Yontz, C/RHP, Sandusky, 2013
5-foot-11, 192-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. Registered a 5.2 40-yard dash time. From the crouch, he showed good catch and receive skills. He reached a top velocity of 76 mph and pop times ranging from 1.97-2.06. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows an uphill path to the ball that produces a line drive swing with pull tendencies. He needs to improve the balance of his swing and incorporate more of his strong, lower-half to generate more torque. On the mound, the right-hander shows good, raw potential. From a high ¾ arm slot, he uses quick, short arm action to generate an 82-84 mph fastball. His curveball shows slurvy type break and sits 69-70 mph while his changeup tends to be erratic and sits 57-62 mph.

Dustin Parker, IF, Lakota West, 2013
6-foot, 200-pound prospect. Registered 5.38 40-yard dash time. In the field, he reached a top velocity of 74 mph using short arm action through an over the top arm slot. He needs to improve his glove work and footwork to take that next step. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a big leg kick, which hinders the fluidity of his swing. As a result, he shows some timing issues, which effects his hands getting through the zone. When he puts it all together, he showed solid, line drive contact.

Dylan Minney, IF, Unioto, 2013
6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect with tall, athletic frame. Registered a 5.20 40-yard dash time. Across the infield, he reached a top velocity of 72 mph using short arm action through an over the top arm slot. Likely projects as a 2B/3B type. Needs to continue improving fluidity of footwork and play through the ball. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts from the crouch with a slightly open stance. He shows good bat speed (83 mph exit velo off the tee) with a short, level path to the ball.

Ethan Willitzer, RHP, Defiance, 2013
5-foot-9, 152 prospect with small, athletic build. Uses quick arm action through over the top arm slot. Fastball registers 78-80 mph. Shows a power, 12/6 curveball with effective downward break. It fluctuates between 62-69 mph. He shows command of a 67-68 mph changeup that is thrown near fastball arm speed with good arm side run.

Garrett Koutsopoulos, RHP, Vermillion, 2013
6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect with tall, lanky frame. Uses slow, deliberate delivery with quick arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Tends to rush the end of his delivery. Fastball shows some arm side run and sits 78-82 mph. More velocity to come with his size, arm speed, and his projectability. Needs to continue developing off-speed pitches. Curveball shows some 11/5 break and sits 64-65 mph. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and sits at 66-67 mph, but lacks effective command.

Grant Kincaid, OF, Oakwood, 2013
6-foot-3, 165-pound prospect with tall, lanky build. From the outfield, he uses quick, long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 78 mph. At the plate, he starts with an open stance and has a tendency to dive into the pitch as he squares up the front side. At times, his swing path can get long, but he shows the potential for power. Needs to work on simplifying and shortening his swing to maximize the use of his size and natural strength.

Jake Dodson, RHP/SS, Bellbrook, 2013
6-foot, 155-pound prospect. Uses moderate arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. His fastball sits at 77-78 mph. His curveball some shows tilt and sits between 70-72 mph. His changeup sits at 70 mph. It tends to be straight and is thrown near fastball arm speed.

Jake Trejo, C/IF, Wauseon, 2013
6-foot, 175-pound prospect with solid, athletic build. Registered a 5.29 40-yard dash time. In the infield, he reached a top velocity of 77 mph using short arm action. Needs to improve footwork and softness of his hands. Behind the plate, he registered pop times ranging from 1.99-2.17 with a top velocity of 74. Likely projects as a catcher at the next level. At the plate, he shows good balance to a contact/line drive type swing, but needs to improve his load and use of his lower half to achieve better torque.

Jerad Kitzler, OF/RHP, St. Charles, 2013
6-foot-1, 155-pound prospect with good athleticism. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to reach a top velocity of 78 mph. Uses clean exchange and transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with an open setup in a slight crouch. He begins heavy on his backside and shows a lot of movement with his swing. Still, he shows an explosive lower half with good torque. This results in good bat speed through the zone (84 mph exit velo off the tee). Interesting hitter from the left-side, but may need to simplify his swing some for the next level.

Jordan Huggins, OF/RHP, Springfield Shawnee, 2013
5-foot-10, 155-pound prospect with athletic, muscular build. Registered a 5.14 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. Shows quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot with a quick, clean transfer to reach a top velocity of 83 mph from the outfield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slight crouch and partially open stance. Shows a tendency to collapse on the backside. Uses a short, slightly uphill path to the ball. On the mound, he uses a slow rhythm to his delivery with quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball is straight and sits at 74-77 mph. His curveball shows gradual 12/6 break and sits at 57-59 mph.

Joseph Swisher, IF, Westerville Central, 2013
5-foot-6, 150-pound prospect with small, athletic frame. Registered a 5.15 40-yard dash time on concrete. Projects as a second baseman Active body defensively with good feet and hands & accurate throws. Balanced stance offensively with slight crouch, good hand load with controlled upper cut and bat speed into zone. Runs into issues when he doesn’t square up the front side due to his load. When he does, he gets nice lower half torque. Has some front side leakage and needs to square up front side more consistently. Good small college bat and needs to get physically stronger.

Justin Van Hoesen, OF, Delaware Hayes, 2013
5-foot-9, 135-pound prospect with small, athletic frame. Registered a 5.1 40-yard dash time on concrete surface. From the outfield, he uses a long, over the top arm slot with long arm action to reach a top velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, he hits from both sides. He sets up in a slightly open stance with a crouch from both sides. He is a contact type guy that shows more power from the right side.

Logan Mann, OF/RHP, Vandalia-Butler, 2013
