Preseason All-State: Catchers Analysis

On Saturday, February 20th, we hosted the annual Preseason All-State showcase at Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis.  A total of 78 players from across the state participated in the event


Below is a look at catchers who participated in the event.

Tyler Burthay, C, Western HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 205 pound receiver had pop times of 1.94, 1.96 and 2.01, all on the bag.  Was 81 from the crouch with carry and accuracy.  Quick, clean transfer. Possesses quick feet with athleticism.  Soft hands when receiving. At the plate hits from an open setup.  Hands tend to drop during the load.  Long stride, dives at times. Coils. Good balance.  Above average bat speed.  Long, uphill swing plane. Hard contact. High exit velocity of 90 mph.  Also ran a 6.97. 

Alex Cleverly, C, Noblesville HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 180 pounder was 2.15, 2.17 and 2.19 with his pop times.  77 from the crouch.  Tends to pop straight up on his throws to 2B.  Needs to quicken up the transfer.  Slow arm action, but displayed some arm strength.  At the plate showcased average bat speed from a long, uphill swing path.  Tall, open setup, short stride. High exit velocity of 83 mph. 

Nick Coy, C, Center Grove HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 175 pound catcher was 73 from the crouch with pop times of 2.02, 2.05 and 2.1.  Possesses good footwork behind the plate with a quick arm.  Tendency to reach for pitches.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup, drops hands during the load.  Above average bat speed.  Ability to get to extension, uphill swing plane.  Early rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 75 mph. 

Colin Donahue, C, Carmel HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 200 pounder was 2.00, 2.02 and 2.05 with his pop times, 75 from the crouch.  Possesses a quick transfer with a strong arm.  Tendency to come around the baseball.  Good setup, receives well. At the plate hits from a crouch type setup, smooth load, short stride.  Lower half collapses at times.  Showcased above average bat speed, level to slightly uphill swing path.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 87 mph.  

JC Hanley, C, Carmel HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 200 pounder was 1.98, 2.00 and 2.01 with his pop times, 75 from the crouch.  Quick arm action, long/clean transfer on his throws.  Good feet.  At the plate hits from a balanced approach.  Toe tap, average use of the lower half.  Good hands at the plate, average bat speed.  Level path.  Ability to get to extension.  Hard contact to his pull-side.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 83. 

Evan Hylek, C, Andrean HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 160 pounder was 74 from the crouch and produced pop times of 2.1, 2.13 and 2.18.  Quick arm action, good direction.  Possesses some athleticism.  Sticks pitches well.  At the plate hits from a tall, slightly open setup.  Good use of his lower half. Smooth load, short stride. Has some looseness in the swing.  Average bat speed, line drive type hitter.  High exit velocity of 78 mph. 

Jarrett Lopez, C, Lake Central HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 163 pound receiver was 77 from the crouch with pop times of 2.04, 2.1, and 2.16.  Possesses good footwork, but lacks elite foot speed.  Arm action was quick.  Average receiver.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup using a short stride.  Minimal load.  Average use of the lower half with good balance.  Long path that gets to extension.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph. 

Damon Maynard, C, Greenwood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 170 pound receiver was 77 from the crouch and had pop times of 2.01, 2.05 and 2.07.  Showcased a quick transfer and quick arm action.  Good direction on his throws.  Offensively, hits out of a wide, open setup.  Smooth load with a short stride. Dives at times.  Showcased average bat speed .  Short path to the baseball, produced line drives.  Rhythm is a little choppy.  Recorded a high exit velocity o 84 mph.  

Drew Minnich, C, Northwood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 185 pounder recorded pop times of 2.01, 2.07 and 2.08.  74 from the crouch.  Possesses quick feet behind the dish.  Needs to clean up the transfer.  Arm action gets long.  At the plate hits from an open stance, uses a leg kick.  Fair balance with a fair approach to the baseball. Tends to come around the baseball.  Rhythm is a little stiff and early.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph.  Ran a 7.13-60. 

Matthew Phillips, C, Yorktown HS, 2017: 6-foot, 215 pounder was 2.12, 2.15 and 2.17 with his pop times and 69 from the crouch.  Needs to improve his footwork.  Tends to come around the ball.  Arm is quick once his gets started.  Offensively, this from a balanced setup.  Load is smooth, short stride.  Dives, heavy front side.  Average bat speed, good balance.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 84 mph.  

Brandon Reid, C, Brownsburg HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 180 pound receiver produced pop times of 1.94, 1.95 and 1.98.  From the crouch was 77 mph.  Possesses quick feet and a clean exchange behind the dish.  Short, quick arm action.  Solid receiver with good hands and athleticism.  At the plate hits from slightly open setup and uses a short stride.  Good use of his lower half with good balance.  Average bat speed, level path.  Rhythm is a little choppy.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 78 mph. 

Trenton Schneider, C, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 180 pound receiver was 2.01, 2.05 and 2.10 with his pop times, 76 from the crouch.  Possesses good footwork with a  quick arm.  Long, sweepy transfer.  Hits form an open setup, minimal load, low hands.  Short stride with a tendency to dive.  Late over rotation with the lower half.  Showed average bat speed, long path.  Early rhythm.  

Brody Tanksley, C, Bedford North Lawrence HS, 2017: 6-foot, 205 pounder recorded pop times of 2.08, 2.10 and 2.12, 79 from the crouch.  Possesess a quick arm behind the dish with arm strength.  Long transfer, average feet.  Soft hands while receiving.  Blocks well.  At the plate this from a balanced setup, uses a leg kick. Tendency to dive. Good balance.  Possesses above average bat speed.  Long path.  Rhythm is early.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 86 mph. 

Nolan Wetherald, C, Columbus North HS, 2017: 5-foot-8, 165 pounder produced pop times of 2.1, 2.13 and 2.19.  From the crouch was 73 mph.  Needs to quicken up the exchange and feet, which should reduce the pop times.  Slight hitch in the arm action.  Offensively, hits form a balanced setup and uses a short stride. Minimal load. Short path to the baseball.  Made some hard contact during his BP session.  Average balance in the swing.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 74.
