ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at SS Brian McClellin

Northern CA Director of Scouting

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. The MLB draft will be June 10th and include only five rounds.

We've been building the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/sim-game-type action. We will be ready to roll out our new tech partners, TrackMan, Blast Motion, Driveline, and Vizual Edge.

In the likelihood the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions on that campus we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop on the same date. We also have alternative dates secured later in the summer. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes.

A LOOK BACK AT...

SS Brian McClellin (Vacaville HS) - report from 6/9/19

2020 SS Brian McClellin (Cal commit) listed at 6-foot-0, 175-pounds (now listed 6-foot-1, 182-lbs), he's built to play up the middle and has a frame that will hold size and strength gains during his collegiate career. Lanky proportions with what appears to be natural size/strength at this point. Moves athletically with confident actions and does just about everything smoothly. McClellin was one of the players who not only showed beyond our expectations, but did so for the bounty of MLB scouts on hand.

Vacaville HS has turned out many D1 players in recent years, Area Code Games participants and a fair share of professional prospects. McClellin's development throughout last spring and continuing into and through this summer has thrust him into a higher category of prospect status. He has always displayed the potential to be an elite glove man up the middle and with his commitment to Cal, that is what drew the Golden Bears to him. However, it now looks like McClellin will step foot on the Berkeley campus with a different profile... that of a plus defender who now has offensive talents that are blossoming.

McClellin's best physical asset are his hands. Defensively he has soft and sure hands, he catches the ball cleanly and plays with excellent hand/feet rhythm. The arm is another strong asset, with 85 mph velocity across the diamond he showed arm strength that will keep him at shortstop provided he continues to catch the ball on a routine basis. That arm also plays real well on double play turns from the 2nd base position, where he is able to make strong accurate throws using little more than his talented arm. His feeds to 2nd base from the SS position were clean and fluid and he went both left and right well, while playing the slow roller athletically and comfortably.

As a hitter McClellin made us take notice as well. The swing is easy and compact. He peppered balls to left field and also up the middle. With plus hand speed he maintained barrel control, indicating that he has a chance to not only hit, but to hit good pitching and hit for average. The power should evolve into gap type power, with extra base hits going for doubles and some occasional home run power. Time will tell how physical his body gets and if he does gain that strength, his hand speed and hand-eye coordination will allow him to develop average power. A shortstop with plus defensive skills who has the potential to hit for average (and hit quality pitching) and provide some pop? Yes, that is a profile that is extremely desirable.

McClellin firmly put himself on the MLB area scout map at this event and it contributed to him not only being invited to the Area Code Games tryout, but also in making that team. When the spring of 2020 rolls around, he will be another Vacaville HS player drawing scout attention, not just his teammate Michael Brown.
