Q & A with Northern Kentucky commit Caleb Kellogg (North Oldham HS)

By Chris Fuller

Caleb Kellogg, OF/RHP, North Oldham HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose Northern Kentucky University?

Kellogg: I chose NKU for several reasons. I felt like Coach Asalon and I hit it off really well on my visit, they are moving to Division 1, they offered a great scholarship opportunity and the chance to come in and play right away.

PBR: Did NKU moving from Division 2 to Division 1 play a role in your decision?

Kellogg: Absolutely NKU moving to D1 played a very important part in my decision.  One of my goals has always been to play division 1 baseball.  NKU is positioned really well to make the move to D1 especially for recruiting with their proximity to Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Kellogg: I really kept the recruiting wide open for the most part.  I was blessed with several offers and weighing the pros and cons when NKU came in and made their offer, which really made it extremely difficult for me to consider the other offers.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you play?

Kellogg: I'm really not sure when they first saw me play.  Coach Asalon said they've watched me play at least 5 times.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play throughout your first year?

Kellogg: Come in earn playing time in the outfield and at the plate. Adjust to playing D1 Baseball as quickly as possible.

PBR: What would you consider your biggest strength as a player?

Kellogg: I hope my coaches would say I work hard.  My parents didn't give a free ride in the Kellogg home so working hard was expected.  As far as baseball skills, power from the plate and a strong arm.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on your career as a baseball player?

Kellogg: I've been blessed with many great baseball minds involved with me while growing up.  My dad started working with me when I was young and had me begin hitting from the left side early.  John Marshall who coaches my summer team the Louisville Panthers has really helped me with my understanding of the game and given me the confidence I need to play D1 baseball.  Chris Burke, who I've been taking lessons from for about 2 years, helped to make me a complete hitter for power as well as average.  My high school coach Eric Phelps' baseball knowledge from a tactical side of baseball has been huge for my development.  Without these guys, along with a few others, there is no way I could have had the success I've been blessed to have.  I still have a lot to learn and will continue working hard to a make these guys proud.

.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer?

Kellogg: Louisville Panthers

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment?

Kellogg: Winning the Class A State Baseball Championship with CAL, winning the Region Title with North Oldham.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced in Kentucky?

Kellogg: Clinton Hollon, I went 1-3 with a K, a double and fly out.

PBR: What are your goals for your senior season at North Oldham?

Kellogg: My goals this year are to help North Oldham make it back to State, hit .450+, with at least 10 HR's.
