Q and A with 2012 Ohio State Commit Jacob Brobst (Bishop Watterson)

Jacob Brobst, a speedy right-handed hitting and throwing outfielder from Bishop Watterson in Columbus, recently committed to The Ohio State University. Read more about his commitment ...

PBR: Which schools were you considering prior to committing to Ohio State?
Brobst: Xavier and Miami (OH)

PBR: What were you looking for in a university?
Brobst: I wanted to find a place that fit me personally and one that I could see me growing in my 4 years there. I wanted a place that I felt like I would be happy at even if I wasn’t going to play baseball. Also, academics were a huge factor. Plus I wanted to find a place that would fit me athletically.

PBR: What did Coach Beals and the OSU staff present to you that made you feel comfortable, was there a deciding factor?
Brobst: An opportunity. I went to the camp last year, and said right after that Ohio State was where I wanted to go to school. When I visited, it confirmed that Ohio State was the best fit for me. Plus, Coach Beals and staff are great at developing players, so playing for them and being able to learn from them is something I am very excited for. Ultimately I felt like Ohio State gave me the best chance to succeed on and off the field.

PBR: Was staying local a big factor?
Brobst: Definitely. Family has always been really important to me. I really wanted to be able to go home whenever I wanted and still be that present big brother to my younger brother and sister.

PBR: Was waiting until the final weeks before the early signing period something you envisioned doing?
Brobst: Yes, it was. I knew I wanted to take my time with my decision. So many kids commit over the summer before they get a chance to see a school’s campus with students on it. So much changes about a campus over the summer vs. during the school year. I wanted to be able to visit during the school year to get a feel of what the campus is really like.

PBR: The most recent Watterson alums to play at Ohio State were Brian and Dan DeLucia, both former OSU captains. Do you have any relationship with the DeLucias and does following what they've done give you inspiration?
Brobst: Yes, I have stayed in contact with both of the DeLucia brothers, especially Brian, over the past year. Obviously they are great people to look up to and to aspire towards as I go into college baseball. Both were very successful, great leaders, and most importantly hard workers. They’re definitely two people I’m looking to emulate while at Ohio State.

PBR: What were your spring 2011 stats?
Brobst: .478 BA, 3 HR, 6 2B, 5 3B, 18 RBI, 18 BB, 14 SB

PBR: What awards and honors have you received so far?
Brobst: First Team All-CCL, First Team All-District, First Team All-Ohio, named team captain for 2012 season

PBR: Do you have any academic honors you would like to mention?
Brobst: National Honors Society, Honor Roll, National Merit Nominee

PBR: As you head into your senior year what goals do you have?
Brobst: I want to help take a Watterson team to states, plus have a solid year personally. Leave it all on the field. I want to finish knowing I gave it my all and have no regrets.

PBR: What do you feel are your strengths?
Brobst: Speed, defense, combination of power and speed at the plate

PBR: What areas are you concentrating on, focusing on?
Brobst: My approach at the plate, being aggressive with fastballs early in the count. Also really driving the ball to all fields and working the bunt into my game.

PBR: What has been the most memorable moment on the diamond for you so far?
Brobst: Making the Oak Mountain (AL) All-Star team and winning the Metro Championship in 2005.
