Q and A with Ryan Boutelle (Gowanda HS, NY, 2014)

Dan Cevette
New York Scouting Director

Name: Ryan Boutelle
High School: Gowanda HS, NY
Position: CF/3B/C/P
College Commitment: St. Bonaventure

PBR New York sat down with standout Ryan Boutelle, who we watched play last night, for a question and answer session.

PBR: How did you prepare for the 2014 season?

Boutelle: I prepared for the 2014 season by never taking a day off, rain or shine, I am always working hard.

PBR: Being smaller in size how have you overcome that on the field and turned that into a positive?

Boutelle: Being smaller I have always felt like I needed to work harder than everyone to prove myself. I always push myself 110% everyday. It has also made me realize from a young age that I wasn't going to be hitting home-runs, that I needed to hit the ball hard on a line and use my speed to my advantage.

PBR: What are your college plans after this year?

Boutelle: My college plans are playing at St. Bonaventure. I love the program and the way its ran. The coaches make you feel right at home. I committed there the summer of 2013 after looking at a few other schools but I went with the Bonnies.

PBR: Who is the best player you have seen this year?

Boutelle: The best player I have seen this year would be Grant Holmes, who plays for the Conway HS team in South Carolina. He is a Sr. in HS and was throwing 97mph it was just eye opening to see that kind of talent is out there.

PBR: Who is the best team you have seen this year?

Boutelle: Orchard Park is definitely the best team I have seen. I play with a lot of those guys in travel ball and they can just swing it great 1-9.

PBR: Did you play travel ball last year?

Boutelle: Yes my team was one of the best in the area run by Coach Charlie Karstedt (Former D1 Player at UB). He works very hard to get the very best kids all over western New York. He runs it like a college program, pushes us to our fullest potential maximizing our true talent. I couldn't be happier with the team I picked to play for last summer.

PBR: Gives us a fun fact about yourself other people might not know.

Boutelle: In Tee-Ball I used to chase the runners down rather than throwing it to kids because I knew I had a better chance getting outs that way vs. other kids that age catching it. Also, In HS my favorite class is history of Rock and Roll.

Ryan Boutelle - Scouting Notes
Boutelle plays the game with respect and I really like seeing that in kids. Boutelle stands 5-foot-9 but doesn't let that stop him. He pounded a ball to the left center gap his first at bat with a stand up triple, rounding the bag in 4.39 seconds. He projections with his speed in the outfield but was catching last night. He thew a dart to the bag to get a runner with a 2.13 pop time. He has nice quick hands and good balance at the plate. Hes the definition of hard noised and scrappy. Last year he ran a 6.9 at a showcase in Buffalo.
