Q&A With Kent State Commit Vince Waterman

By: Peter Hamot
Area Scout

LHP Vince Waterman (Homewood-Flossmoor) is one of the top LHP in the state. He played a key role on the mound for a highly talented Homewood-Flossmoor team, helping them to an overall record of 22-9 and a final ranking of No. 21 in the PBR Power 25. After his dominant spring he carried his impressive play into the summer, where he landed an invite to the PBR Future Games to play for Team Illinois, committing to Kent State shortly after.

We recently had the opportunity to discuss the recruiting process with Waterman, what he was looking for out of his college experience and several other intriguing topics.

Scouting Report

Rake City Scout Day (8/5/21):
One of the top arms at the event was LHP Vince Waterman (Homewood-Flossmoor, 2023). The left-hander’s loose/quick arm helps produce easy velocity from his highly projectable frame. Extremely athletic; Waterman uses a drop-and-drive style delivery to gain power down the mound while striding in-line. Waterman’s fastball topped out at 87 mph with arm-side life through the zone and a max spin-rate of just over 2500 rpm. He uses a 1/7 breaking ball with sharp action in the 71-73 mph range and a changeup in the 80-81 mph range to keep would-be hitters off balance. Upside uncommitted 2023 arm.

Our Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Waterman: I wanted to be at a school where I felt I fit in and one that was welcoming.

P: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

W: Somewhat, I didn't want to be in my backyard but I didn't want to be across the country.

P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

W: The recruiting process started to heat up for me last fall and the beginning of this past summer. Kent State saw me in Grand Park, Indiana and a couple other tournaments throughout the year.

P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

W: I love the coaching staff, I built a great relationship with them throughout the summer and they made me feel important to the future of their program. They also have a great history of players, specifically pitchers getting the chance to play baseball beyond college.

P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

W: UIC and Lipscomb.

P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

W: My high school teammate Dillon Head is one of my toughest opponents, he is very competitive and very hard to get out, but is so fun to be able to go back and forth with each other.

P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

W: I think I realized it when my recruiting process began last fall after a big game.

P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

W: Find a good program with great coaches and stick with them through the whole process.

P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

W: When my team found a way to beat Canes National down in Lakepoint during the Wilson Premier last fall.

P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

W: Homewood Flossmoor has a bunch of winners and is filled with a very talented team. I expect us to go far in the playoffs even though we are part of the best conference in the state of IL.
