Q&A with 2013 University of Central Missouri Commit, Billy Maloney (Rockhurst HS)

PBR: Which schools were you considering prior to committing to the University of Central Missouri?

Maloney: The schools that I was considering prior to committing to UCM would be Avila and Fort Scott Community College.

PBR: What were the reasons that you ultimately chose University of Central Missouri?

Maloney: The reasons I chose the University of Central Missouri is first off they were the first school to show interest in me.  Also, when I went down to UCM on my visit I loved the campus, the facilities and the coaches and it just all seemed like the right fit.

PBR: What was the relationship you had with the University of Central Missouri coaches in the recruitment process?

Maloney: The relationship I had with Coach Myers and his staff from the very beginning was just incredible.  When I went to their camp and on my visit everyone was extremely nice and wanting to help all the time.

PBR: Do you feel that playing in Missouri and facing the competition you do has prepared you to be a college player?

Maloney: I do feel like playing in Missouri and facing good competition has prepared me to play at the college level mainly because of our tough schedule during the summer that Jeremy Jones and Shon Plack put together in order for us to play the best in the Midwest.

PBR: What team did you play for over the summer and how did it go for you? Were there any aspects of your game that you wanted to improve during the summer?

Maloney: I played for Building Champions Baseball Academy which is owned and coached by Jeremy Jones and Shon Plack. Over the summer I really enjoyed playing for both of them and having fun on road trips.  The coaches are always trying to play the best competition and get as much exposure as we can to get us ready for the next level.

PBR: As you head into your senior year, is it good to have the commitment and recruiting process done?

Maloney: It is a great feeling knowing where I will be attending college next year and I think it is good to commit early if you know it’s the right fit.  By committing early, I also have to work harder knowing that I will be playing at the next level and I need to prepare and practice everyday.

PBR: Do you feel that this season will be any different considering that you know where you’ll attend college?

Maloney: I don’t think this season will be any different considering I committed because our goal is to win a state championship and I think doing that our senior year would be awesome since it has never been done at Rockhurst.

PBR: What do you hope to accomplish in this upcoming season on an individual level?

Maloney: In this upcoming high school season, I hope to improve my game in all aspects and do what I need to do to help my team win.  I hope to get quicker and stronger throughout the winter and the spring.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from the past summer?

Maloney: I play for Building Champions Baseball Academy in the summer which is Coached Jeremy and Shon.  Shon Plack was my summer coach and I had a great time listening to all the stories he told us and him telling me everything he knows about the game of baseball which has made me a better player.

PBR: What advice would you give to other players who are just beginning the recruiting process?

Maloney: Some advice I would give to other players who are just beginning the recruiting process is start by getting a list of schools that you are interested in and go after those schools first.  Then during the summer see if any of those schools are interested in yourself and contact them by email or camps and let them know you are interested.  After that, narrow it down to a few schools and weigh all of your options before you commit.
