Roncalli Dominates Lawrence Central

Indianapolis, IN--- Roncalli took on Lawrence Central in the second semi-final game in sectional 10 at Cathedral today.  The Rebels had already knocked off LC twice this season, with the latest win coming a couple of weeks ago in the Marion County Championship game at Victory Field.

Early it appeared LC was ready to break their two game losing streak to the Rebels, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first.  Senior Jaylen Quarles (Southeastern Illinois College) hit an RBI single for the Bears first run, and was later brought in by fellow senior John Jones’ (Southeastern Illinois College) RBI double.

Freshman Jarrett Montgomery, Christian Montgomery’s brother, earned the start for LC and looked good through two innings.  After two Montgomery allowed 0 runs and had three strikeouts, displaying a good mid-80’s fastball and solid breaking ball.

However, things fell apart for the young freshman in the third.  Roncalli senior Colin Hawk (Cincinnati) led off the inning with a triple off the wall, and then scored on Jason Simpkins (2012) double, cutting the Rebels’ deficit to one.  Roncalli’s offense would not let up as senior Joey Ardizzone reached on an infield hit.  Nick Wright earned a walk in the next at bat to load the bases.  Simpkins tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch.  After another wild pitch and three walks, Roncalli took a 4-2 lead, sending Montgomery out of the game.  Senior RHP Michael Moffatt entered the game for the Bears, and quickly got the first out of the inning by striking out sophomore Aaron Schnell.  However the quick out would not faze Roncalli as they tacked on six more runs in the inning to give the Rebels a 10-2 lead after three.

Roncalli added five more runs in the fifth, with three coming off of Schnell’s homerun.   The Bears tacked on two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, but were unable to cross the plate again, giving the 15-4 win in five innings.

Roncalli will face Warren Central for the sectional championship at 6 pm at Cathedral.
