As rain ravaged the state of Louisiana over the weekend, it made getting the 2nd round of playoffs difficult to complete around the state.
Difficult and unfortunate decisions were made, forcing a few matchups to be reduced to a single elimination, while some series were granted extensions to finish out.
As the last few months for the LHSAA have proved to be extremely controversial with serious talks about schools leaving the association to form a new league. This weekend only heightens the scruintity of the LHSAA, and emotions were certainly running high on social media when decisions were handed down Sunday night.
Nonetheless, the playoffs will continue, as teams look to make their way to Sulphur, for State Championship weekend (May 12-14).
Prep Baseball Report Louisiana was out and about all weekend checking in on games. Here are a few nuggets on players seen.
+ No. 24 St. Amant upset No. 8 Brother Martin, 2 to 1 in the series. Brother Martin pulled out a come from behind victory on Friday night, trailing 8 to 4 entering the bottom of 7th, and eventually winning 9 to 8. In the first contest on Saturday, St. Amant sent Louisiana State recruit, Blayne Enlow, to the hill. Enlow’s stuff was electric on short rest, pitching 88-92 mph with heavy life. Although he didn’t have his best fastball command, he threw more than enough strikes. He spun an outstanding breaking ball, with exceptional command, all day at 78-82 mph with sharp break, depth and tight spin.
+ No. 5 Jesuit held off a very talent Destrehan (No.12) club over the weekend. The Wildcats sent out Southeastern Louisiana commit, Cole Martin on Friday night. Martin was excellent on the night, showing a solid 3-pitch mix and only allowed 1 run on 3 hits. Jake Licciardi would send a hanging changeup from Martin into the left-center gap for a double. Later in the inning, Nick Ray would single to left on a hanging breaking ball, for the only run of the ball game. Florida International recruit, Brandon Briuglio, would hold the Wildcats scoreless with a low-80s fastball and solid cutter/slider, attacking the outer half of plate all night with both pitches.
+ No. 15 Acadiana upset district rival No. 2 Layette on Monday to take the series and advance to the Quarterfinals. Acadiana jumped out to an early 3 to 0 lead in the 1st inning with 2018 Hunter Tabb barreling an RBI double to right field. Unsigned Senior, Tyler Miller (Lafayette), was impressive on the day, tallying a couple hits including perhaps the most exciting point of game. With the score 5 to 2 and a runner on 1st, Miller singled to left field, the ball got by the outfield rolling all the way to wall, allowing Miller to come all the way around to score.
+ McNeese State recruit, Cain Castille, showed quality catch and throw skills throughout the game, giving consistent 2.0 pop times in-between inning. Unsigned Senior, Hudson LaBorde, showed exceptional bat speed, and hitterish actions. Although he had nothing to show for it, LaBorde put several good swings together.
+ Unsigned Senior, Emile Lege (Lafayette), came in relief for the Lions and showed impressive stuff. A 5-foot-10 right-hander with a clean, loose arm action into ¾ release with regular effort and quick arm speed. Fastball sat 86-91 mph with quality sink. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with spin and occasional depth at 75-78 mph.
