Scouting Notes: Elder vs. Northmont

By Roger Janeway

ELDER SCOUTING NOTES

Junior right-handed pitcher Joe Ramstetter started for Elder going three plus innings allowing four runs. The 6-foot-4 hurler fanned six during that time but allowed 6 walks. Throwing from the upper 3/4 slot, Ramstetter showed a quick arm with some funk. Fastball ranged from 83-87 mph with movement. The inability to corral his movement led to many deep counts. He showed some spin on 71-73 mph curveball and some decent arm action on change-ups at 77-78 mph.

Stocky built junior outfielder Jimmy White (L/R, 5'11, 210) made some nice plays in centerfield; which included showing off a solid carry on several game throws. Hitting from a crouch stance, he is a line drive hitter to all fields and possesses average foot speed.

NORTHMONT SCOUTING NOTES

Junior left-handed pitcher Tom Stoffel (L/L, 5'10, 185) had a hard luck day. Coming on in relief, he pitched well for 3 and 2/3 innings but suffered the loss. Pitching exclusively from the stretch, he showed clean arm from 3/4 slot. Fastball velocity was 84-88 mph with some arm side run and some cut action on others. Threw strikes and was aggressive. Showed some wicked cut-sliders and feel for spin on curveball. Offensively, the D-1 two-shotter had one hit on the day.

Senior outfielder Tyler Barker (R/R, 5'10, 170) showed good baseball sense and aggressive play. Looks to be a fine D-2 player with solid arm strength and foot speed. Collected pair of line drive hits.

Junior first baseman Tyler Mangen (L/L, 6'6, 220) endured a rough offensive day at the plate. A good raw prospect, would like to see him enhance his backside load & hand trigger along with pitch recognition. Did not pitch, but he has been clocked earlier in spring at 81-84 mph from upper 3/4 slot.
