- Day 2 -

The Shipyard/PBR Showdown did not disappoint on day one. In the three games played there was an extra inning game between Indian Land and Stratford, a 1 run game between McBee and Nation Ford and a three run game between Byrnes and McBee. The talented field provided for an exciting Day 1 atmosphere and left everyone excited for Day 2.

Day 2 featured some more competitive baseball with the largest margin of victory going to the McBee Panthers in their 7-2 win over Indian Land, which oddly enough, was tied at the end of regulation and ended after 8 innings. Highlighted in our day two reports are several top pitching performances and individual offensive efforts. 

 

Game 1 - Indian Land vs. Byrnes
Jay Hildreth (RHP, Indian Land, 2019) vs. Dylan Mullinax (RHP, Byrnes, 2019)

The 12:00 game saw two uncommitted 2019 arms dueling against each other in Jay Hildreth (Indian land) and Dylan Mullinax (Byrnes). Both right handers settled into a good rhythm and kept their teams in the game. Hildreth struck out 6 during his 4 innings of work and Mullinax countered by striking out 2 and not allowing a walk. Byrnes jumped in front early, after a walk and hit batter put two men on, Easton Cullison delivered a single to RF that would score two runs. Indian Land would answer with a Connor Ouimet fielders choice that scored Bradon Small who had reached on an error earlier in the inning. The game was stay close until the later innings when Byrnes broke it open by scoring 1 in the 5th and two in the sixth to make it 5-1 game. Indian Land would battle back to load the bases in their half of the 7th and bring the tying run the plate after scoring a run on a Maddox Morrison single, however Byrnes would slam the door to take the win 5-2. 

 

*TOP PROSPECTS*

Jay Hildreth (RHP, Indian Land, 2019) Uncommitted. Large profile with a strong lower half. Worked the fastball from a HTQ arm slot with arm side life at 77-80 mph. Worked down in the zone to get his share of ground balls. Erratic with his control for stretches but was able to work through. Mixed a big sweeping curveball at 60-63 with a 66-69 mph change up to keep hitters off balance. Competed with a calm demeanor and worked out of several jams. Should give the Warriors a chance when he is on the mound.

Dylan Mullinax (RHP, Byrnes, 2019) Uncommitted. Proportional athlete with room to continue his physical development. Easy delivery and mild effort level should allow him to log a ton of innings. FB velocity held at 80-83 during his 4 innings of work. FB showed some wiggle to the arm side at times but was mainly flat through the zone. Showcased a tight 11/5 breaking ball with late bite.

 

 

Connor Ouimet (OF, Indian Land, 2019) Uncommitted. average physical frame is countered by his high baseball IQ and approach to the game. Simple approach has produced several quality ABs on the weekend. Simple toe tap leg kick and minimal hand load get the barrel on plane with a steeper attack angle. Showed a tendency to hit the ball up the middle and to the opposite field. Not a burner but a good runner when he gets under way, efficient with his OF routes and solid-avg arm strength.

 

 

 

Braden Small (2B/RHP, Indian Land, 2022) Uncommitted. Youthful prospect with upside. Showed a solid defensive tool in the infield with flashes of promise at 2B. Also pitched the late innings, with a shorter arm stroke and quick take away. Will rely on location and changing speeds until the arm strength improves. There is some deception to the release point that will help the ball jump out of the hand as he gets stronger. 

 

 

Clay Cox (OF/RHP, Byrnes, 2019) Uncommitted. Long physical athlete with a present mix of strength and athleticism. Translated a loud round of BP into some aggressive in game swings. Plus power potential with developing bat to ball skills. 

 

 

 

Game 2 - Nation Ford vs. Stratford

The second of the 12:00 games pitted 5A teams Nation Ford and Stratford against one another. With college bound athletes across the board this was a solid matchup that lived up to the hype. Hudson Mankin took the ball for the Falcons and struck out 5 in 3 and 1/3 innings, however the command was somewhat erratic with 6 walks. Josh Davis scattered 8 hits across his seven innings of work with 8 Ks and 2 walks. Nation Ford jumped out early with a Mankin RBI double but was answered by the Knights when Dylan Stewart singled and eventually scored via a Travis Lott ground out. The Knights would take the lead in the next frame on a Stewart Sac fly scoring Matthew Cudd who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. That would do it for the scoring for Stratford who would surrender the lead in the top of the third after Xavier Cumbee singled and Tyler Causey tripled to deep RF. Causey would later score on a Bradley Bott single to give the Falcons the lead for good. Bott would cap a 3 for 4 day with a single in the 7th, driving in Cumbee to extend the lead to 4-2 in favor of Nation Ford. Noah Petty threw 3 and 2/3rds for Nation Ford holding the Knights scoreless while scattering 3 hits and striking out 1. 

*TOP PROSPECTS *

Bradley Bott (OF, Nation Ford, 2019) UNC Greensboro Recruit. Rangy CF with balanced athleticism. Solid arm strength from center field and a quality defensive tool. Picked up 3 hits and two RBI during this game. Profiles more as a count specific base stealer but that is trending up. 

Josh Davis (3B/OF, Stratford, 2021) Uncommitted. Rounded shoulders and solid base for future development. Worked the FB with ASR up to 82 and complimented it with a 74 mph SL with slurvy shape and a 71 mph CH. Maintained a good tempo throughout his delivery with medium effort from a TQ arm slot.

 

 

 

Hudson Mankin (LHP, Nation Ford, 2021) Uncommitted. Youthful prospect with a high ceiling, slender frame and long limbs. FB was clean out of the hand and rode through the zone with life. (79-81 t83) ASR at times and 3 pitch mix with 71 mph CB and 73 mph CH.

 

 

 

Xavier Cumbee (2B/OF, Nation Ford, 2019) USC Sumter Recruit. High waisted athlete with a plus speed tool. Inconsistent with his bat to ball contact at times. If the on base percentage can improve he will be able to use the speed to his advantage. Rangy defender at second who could play any OF position if the arm strength increases. 

 

Game 3 - Indian Land vs. McBee
Tanner Chassereau (RHP, Indian Land, 2020) vs. McIver Wallace (3B/RHP, McBee, 2020)

The first of the 3:15 games provided an intriguing matchup of the two smallest schools in the field. McIver Wallace took the ball for McBee and threw 5 innings, stirking out 5 and walking 3 while allowing 2 runs. Tanner Chassereau countered for the Warriors and held the Panthers in check for the greater part of this game, scattering 8 hits and striking out 2. Indian Land would strike first with 2 runs when a Chase Dougherty single was followed by two walks and  back to back singles from Chassereau and Connor Burns. McBee would answer in their half of the 4th when Clark Kirkley lead off with a single, advanced to second on a pass ball and scored on a Urbaniak single. A safety squeeze from Chris Escobar would tie the game at 2 which is where it would stay for the remainder of regulation. The Panthers offense would come to life in the top of the 8th to score 5 runs on 7 hits and put the game away, for a 7-2 victory. 

 

* TOP PROSPECTS *

Connor Kirkley (SS/RHP, McBee, 2019) Coastal Carolina Recruit. Compact athleticism with room to add functional strength. Worked the second half of the game on the mound for the Panthers. FB was up to 88 and settled in at 86-87 throughout the outing. Whippy loose arm action and a tight breaking ball at 74 mph.

 

Game 4 - Stratford vs. Byrnes
Cody Kinard (2B/RHP, Stratford, 2019) vs. Kadan Roach (RHP, Byrnes, 2023)

The second of the 3:15 games turned into a wild 11 inning affair that saw 6 ties and/or lead changes in the sixth inning or later. Kadan Roach, a 2023 grad, would start for the Rebels and last 4 innings while only allowing 3 hits. On the other side, Cody Kinard turned in a quality start for the Knights throwing 6 innings while striking out 9 and walking 1, scattering 4 runs. Byrnes would jump in front early scoring 1 run in the 1st and another in the 3rd. Stratford would answer in the top of the 5th. Dylan Stewart singled to RF and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Cody Kinard would help his cause with an RBI single and Travis Lott would knot things up at 2 with and RBI single to RF. It wouldn't take long for Byrnes to answer after Easton Cullison reached on a walk, stole second base, and scored on a Clay Cox single to right. Cox would eventually come around to score on a Joe Quinn single to make it 4-2 in favor of Byrnes. The 7th inning is where things got crazy. Stratford would score 3 runs in the top of the 7th after a walk and an error put two men on for Blake Marrs. The Lander recruit would deliver a deep fly ball to right field over the out stretched glove of the defender for a two RBI triple, he would score the go ahead run shortly after on a Lott RBI single. Byrnes would answer in their half of the inning on a leadoff double by Cullison who would eventually score on a passed ball. The two teams would trade runs again in the 9th with Startford scoring on a Marrs double and Lott single and Byrnes tying it up again on a Cox walk and Jack Thompson RBI double. Bradley Auten would get things going for Byrnes in the bottom of the 11th with a sharp single back up the middle and score the winning run on a fading fly ball into the right field corner that hit off of the glove of the right fielder and dropped, allowing Auten to score from first. 

* TOP PROSPECTS *

Cody Kinard (2B/OF, Stratford, 2019) Uncommitted. Proportional utility man with a medium average build. Solid approach at the plate with consistent contact and competitive ABs. Really stood out on the mound which is not a listed position. Ran the fastball up to 80 and consistently sat between 77-79 with a side to side breaking ball at 69. Controlled the ball around the zone for the entirety of the outing. 

 

 

Blake Marrs (C, Stratford, 2019) Lander Recruit. Strong durable frame with some room for refinement in the actions. Muscles the barrel through the zone but the balls carries off the bat when he catches it cleanly. Has logged innings at first and behind the plate, showing the athletic ability to play either position. Relies heavily on his timing but with consistent ABs and protection around him in the line up he should have his fair share of pitches to hit.

Matthew Cudd (OF, Stratford, 2020) Uncommitted. Lengthy OF that passes the eye test. Threw some innings on Day 1 and patrolled LF on Day 2. The length is intriguing and the swing is simple. He has worked the middle of the field with ground balls and line drives. As the frame matures, look for the skillset to improve with it.

 

 

 

 

Dylan Stewart (SS, Stratford, 2019) Charleston Southern Recruit. Lean athletic build with good speed and quickness. Showed the ability to turn on pitches on the inner half as well as spray line drives to the opposite field. Barrel can get out of the zone quickly at times. Stride is short and soft with a quiet upper half, creating very little swing and miss.
