Statistical Analysis: Triton JC Scout Day

Staff Writer

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the PBR Illinois staff made their way to River Grove, Ill., to host another JUCO Scout Day, this time at Triton JC. Shortly after the event, we provided an instant analysis, highlighting some of the day’s top overall performers with data support from our TrackMan units.

Today, we’ll continue our coverage by diving deeper into the analytical side of things, taking a look at the top statistical performers from Tuesday’s event.

TOP 60-YARD DASH

Leading this Triton squad in foot speed is left/left OF Adam Pottinger (Deerfield, 2020), who looks the part of an above average centerfield defender capable of covering plenty of ground with an above-average arm to pair. Two high school teammates, OF James Tauer (Lemont, 2019) and MIF Bobby Wisz (Lemont, 2019) clocked in at a few ticks behind Pottinger for the event-lead. Wisz, in particular, showed well with the bat as well and will likely use his speed at the top of the lineup.

MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY

Sophomore eligible RHP Ryan Vice (Lincoln-Way Central, 2018) will look to anchor the Trojans’ staff this upcoming spring with some noticeable arm strength, touching 94 mph last season and topping out at 91.2 mph here. His fastball characteristics are interesting, primarily the 20 inches of Max Induced Vertical Break (IVB), 16.7 inches on average, that allows him to climb up in the zone for potential swings-and-misses. RHP Ryan Linkletter (Johnsburg, 2019) and LHP Ryne Singsank (Elk Grove, 2019) each topped out at 87 mph. Singsank’s fastball averages 17.9 inches of IVB, maxing out at 19.1 inches and likely to play a role as one of the Trojans top starters. RHP Dax Meyer (Willowbrook, 2020) is another interesting arm worth following, particularly because of a heavy ground ball type fastball that works best down in the zone, moving off a horizontal axis.

MAX TRACKMAN EXIT VELOCITY

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Exit Velocity (avg)
1 Matt Flaherty Triton JC 2020 C 94.4 mph
2 Brett Morrison Triton JC 2020 RHP 91.8 mph
3 Ben Hetelle Triton JC 2019 OF 87.9 mph
4 Michael Vaca Triton JC 2019 OF 87.4 mph
5 Lincoln Hackim IV Triton JC 2018 C 86.7 mph
6 Adam Pottinger Triton JC 2020 OF 86.6 mph
7 Julio Cajigas Harper JC 2019 OF 86.6 mph
8 Thomas Schroeder IV Triton JC 2019 SS 84.9 mph
9 Brock Wilken Triton JC 2019 1B 84.6 mph
10 Anthony Vitale Triton JC 2020 3B 84.5 mph
11 Jack Ferraro Triton JC 2018 OF 84.3 mph
12 Bobby Wisz Triton JC 2019 SS 83.9 mph
13 Colin Summerhill Triton JC 2020 C 83.8 mph
14 Mikey Kocen Triton JC 2020 2B 81.4 mph
15 Joe Selby Triton JC 2020 SS 80.4 mph
16 James Tauer Triton JC 2019 OF 77.1 mph
17 John Nocita Triton JC 2020 OF 74.5 mph
18 Cam Kresil Triton JC 2017 OF 73.4 mph

We didn’t record max exit velocity off a tee and instead chose to utilize the data we receive from our TrackMan unit during batting practice. C Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, 2020) took hands-down the loudest round of batting practice, pummeling some baseballs over the left field fence, including one at 396 feet and uncorked one at 103.6 mph for a 390 ft. home run. OF/3B Michael Vaca (Bartlett, 2019) is another interesting power threat from the right side, crushing one 362 feet with a max exit velocity of 99.14 mph. 6-foot-3, 235-pound R/R freshman 1B Brett Morrison (Watkins Memorial, OH, 2020) brings a clear physical presence into the box and showed off that advanced raw power in BP, registering the second highest average exit speed (91.76 mph) and third highest max exit velocity (99.05).

MAX INFIELD VELOCITY

MIF Thomas Schroeder IV (St. Charles East, 2019) is a quick-twitch infield prospect with arm strength that plays true across the diamond. Morrison, who we talked about earlier on, uses that physicality to produce strong throws to third base. The other half of this first baseman duo for the Trojans is 6-foot-5, 200-pound 1B Brock Wilken (Harvest Christian, 2019), who retained his freshman eligibility from last season and is ready to pick up where he left off last season.

MAX OUTFIELD VELOCITY

Pottinger uses that quick-twitch strength and athleticism to get the most out of his throws to home, maxing out at 89 mph on his throws to home, one tick higher than switch-hitting OF Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, 2019); an arm-strength prospect with advanced foot speed to pair. Previously highlighted in the max exit velocity section, Vaca’s all-around athletic profile is intriguing, given the present statistical output and future projection left to come on a 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. He’s a 6.91 runner, has present raw power, and sneaky arm strength.

MAX CATCHER VELOCITY

Flaherty’s physicality and overall strength in the batter’s box translate to his work behind the dish, as he boasts advanced arm strength out of the crouch. C Colin Summerhill (Loyola Academy, 2019) is a 6.90 runner that uses his athleticism behind the dish, recording a max velocity of 78 mph, Summerhill's arm may have played best out of the bunch as it consistently played true and accurate to its target.

TOP POP TIMES

Here’s Flaherty again, headlining this trio of catchers in top pop times, his best being a 1.97 throw down from the crouch.
