TN Game Report: Roane State @ Walters State

On Friday, Roane State traveled to Walters State for a doubleheader.  We were there for the entire first game and an inning-plus of the second game.  Walters State won game 1 by a score of 9-0 and game 2 by a score of 12-1.  This was a nice day and one of the few days we did not have to wear a jacket.  Roane State was previously seen in their season opener and that report can be found here.  Below are notes on select players (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights!): 

Roane State Sophomore Position Players

OF Drew Patterson: 0-6

Uncommitted OF shows line drive-oriented approach.  6’0, 191-pounder w/ well-proportioned frame w/ physical lower half, close to mature frame.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ bat waggle into shift of weight, mini leg kick and proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Got caught on his front foot a few times on this day.  Lot of line drives.  Ideally wants to work gap to gap w/ some pull power.  Defensively, developing corner outfielder w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.

Walters State Sophomore Position Players

OF Logan Carey: 1-7

Memphis commit showed high level tools.  5’10, 175-pounder features short, athletic frame w/ some present lower half strength.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick and proper load.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone.  Pull oriented approach w/ projectable pull power.  Above average runner underway, ran a 4.38 down the line.  Defensively, profiles in CF w/ speed, was not tested in game.

C Hunter Gilliland: 2-3, 2B

Uncommitted catcher shows quality defensive tools, including popping a 2.06 between innings and 2.15 on a caught stealing.  6’1, 205-pounder w/ present strength, some present strength in lower half, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ bat resting on back shoulder into leg kick and proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Small hitch in swing creates occasional length.  Power to all fields.  Profiles as a power first hitting catcher.  Defensively, above average receiver presents a quality low target, consistently beats the ball to the spot.  Soft hands w/ idea of framing.  Quiet.  As a thrower, arm strength w/ carry to target.  Accurate and throws are on the bag.

OF Dylan Harris: 3-7, 2B, HR

North Carolina commit showed CF tools w/ plus run speed.  5’9, 185-pounder features short, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, close to mature build.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick w/ proper load.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone.  All fields approach.  Balanced w/ good hands that stay back w/ barrel control.  Plus runner underway ran a 4.25 down the line.  Covers ground in CF w/ carry to target arm strength. 

3B Austin Henry: 2-5, HR

TCU commit showed all-around tools package.  6’0, 190-pounder features medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ hand and upper body rhythm into leg kick and short hand load.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone.  All fields approach w/ balance.  Knack for contact, zero swing and miss on this day on 5 swings.  Defensively, played 2B and 3B on this day, showed advanced hands w/ 3B arm strength. 

3B Duncan Pence: 3-5, 2B, 2 HR

Uncommitted 3B showed high level offensive tools, including big power.  6’3, 210-pounder features tall, athletic frame w/ some physical projection.  Offensively, hits in a straight on, upright stance w/ hands resting on back shoulder into leg kick and proper load.  Generates premium bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Power to all fields.  Exciting offensive prospect w/ ability to hit for average and power.  Defensively, showed soft hands, athleticism, arm strength at third base.

SS Hunter Wolfe: 3-7

TCU commit showed shortstop defensive tools w/ plus running speed.  6’0, 185-pounder features medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into proper stride and load.  Quiet, repeatable swing.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone.  Advanced approach, has an idea of the strike zone, spin recognition.  Is pitched really tough, sees a lot of off-speed in hitters counts.  Present gap power w/ projectable pull power.  Plus runner ran a 4.16 down the line from the right side.  Defensively, shows plus arm strength w/ easy carry through target, soft hands, good lateral quickness. 

Roane State Sophomore Pitchers

RHP Ronnie Engelman: FB (84-88), CB (72-76), SL (78-81), CH (79-83)

-       6 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Uncommitted righty showed true 4 pitch mix, pitched better than final line indicates.  5’11, 185-pounder features short, athletic frame w/ some present lower half strength, some physical projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up into H ¾ release.  Repeats w/ quick arm.  Straight FB shows occasional cut.  Medium downer CB w/ proper shape, rotation.  SL shows ¾ tilt w/ occasional late bite.  Inconsistent depth, will get slurvy at times, flashes above average w/ tightness.  CH w/ short fade, occasional sink.  Strike-thrower will throw any pitch in any count.  Controls all his pitches, flashes command of all 4.  Projects to command.  Generated 13 swing and misses on 50 swings.

Walters State Sophomore Pitchers

RHP Landon Knack: FB (82-87, T88, 89), CB (68-71), CH (71-73)

-       5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

Uncommitted righty shows advanced feel for pitching w/ ability to add and subtract from his stuff w/ intent.  6’1, 200-pounder features medium, athletic frame w/ physical lower half, close to mature build.  Pitches from a full wind-up into ¾ release.  Repeats.  FB shows short arm-side run.  Medium downer CB w/ proper shape/rotation.  Ability to manipulate spin/shape for the situation.  Flashes above average w/ tight spin, above average depth.  CH w/ arm-speed, fade and sink.  Commands the FB, pitches w/ intent to both sides of the plate, keeps the ball down.  Controls the off-speed, projects to command.  Generated 11 swing and misses on 32 swings.

RHP Hayden Lehman: FB (90-92), CB (76), SL (79-80)

-       5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 11 K

South Carolina commit showed impactful stuff in brief inning-plus look.  6’1, 200-pounder features medium, sturdy frame w/ physical lower half.  Bulldog build w/ close to mature frame.  Pitches from a full wind-up into H ¾ release.  Creates angle.  Slight cocking action in back at times, abbreviated arm circle.  Super quick arm.  Straight FB relies on angle, quick to the window to generate weak contact.  Tight medium downer CB flashes above average depth.  Short ¾ tilt SL featured different shape each of the 3 we saw him throw.  Occasional power slurve, occasional short cut-like action.  Shows potential.  Around the zone w/ all 3.  Feel for throwing off-speed for strikes.  Projects to command.  Generated 5 swing and misses on 12 swings.

Walters State Freshman Pitchers

RHP Gage Gillian: FB (83-86), CB (73-76), CH (79)

-       2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Gillian showed deception w/ true swing and miss breaking ball.  6’2, 170-pounder features ideal pitchers frame w/ high-waist, some present lower half strength, projectable w/ long limbs.  Pitches from a full wind-up into over the top release.  Lot of moving parts creates deception, hard for hitter to focus on the slot.  Downhill plane.  FB shows occasional arm-side run.  Tight medium downer CB w/ late break, flashes above average depth.  Ability to throw it for a strike or as a put-away pitch.  Spiked the one CH he threw.  Strike-thrower threw 20 of 22 pitches for strikes.  Keeps the ball down and misses are out of the middle of the plate.  Advanced feel for CB.  Generated 6 swing and misses on 16 swings, including 5 of 8 on the CB.

Walters State Freshman Position Players

OF Tyler Gentry: 3-5, HR

Gentry shows a projectable frame w/ high offensive upside.  6’2, 205-pounder features tall, athletic frame w/ some present strength, projectable.  Offensively, hits in a slightly closed, upright stance w/ short hand rhythm into toe turn and stride (occasional toe tap) w/ proper load.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Pull oriented approach early in the count, shows ability to hit the ball to all fields w/ 2 strikes.  Above average pull power w/ power potential to all fields as frame develops.  Was not tested in the OF.
