Terre Haute South wins Braves Baseball Bash



Mt. Vernon 7 – New Haven 6

Mt. Vernon tops New Haven Saturday afternoon at the Braves Baseball Bash in Terre Haute with a couple big homeruns.  Mt. Vernon had two homeruns which gave them four of their runs was the difference in this Mt. Vernon victory.

The first inning was quite eventful as it would provide 5 of the game’s 13 total runs. New Haven got their first run of the game off of a dropped infield fly as Justin Bennett would score once the ball hit the grass.  Mt. Vernon would respond in the bottom half with four runs. River Vanzant would single to lead off the inning.  Jevin Redman would then walk followed by a double by Troy Paris, which would score Vanzant.  Drake McNamara would bring in Redman on sacrifice fly then Aaron Roberts would hit a two run homerun scoring himself and Paris giving Mt. Vernon a 4-1 lead.  

New Haven would get three across home plate in the 3rd to tie the game. Kyle Sovine would spark a two out rally with a single and then come in to score off a single by Reeves Shumaker.  Shumaker would come into score as well as Scott Ferguson to tie the game at 4-4.

The 4th and 5th innings provided excitement as both teams scored.  Mt Vernon went up one run in the bottom of the 4th by scoring pinch runner Ryan Goeltz on sacrifice fly from Trevor Veeck. New Haven would reply by tying the game in the top of the fifth as Ferguson would single scoring Shumaker.  Mt. Vernon would push their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two run homerun making the score 7-5.

Tyler Purvis would get Ferguson to score with a ground out scoring their final run, but Mt. Vernon would hold on to get the 7-6 win.

Muster 3 – New Haven 2

Munster edged out New Haven on Saturday at the Braves Baseball Bash in Terre Haute 3-2. Munster managed to get three runs on the board while gathering six hits to get the win.

Munster got on the score board first in the second inning by getting Scott Jerge and Tyler Cole to cross home plate.  Jerge lead off the inning with a single, then two batters later Cole would walk move Jerge into scoring position.  Allan Korum would single to bring Jerge and Craig Dedelow would follow suit to knock in Cole giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

It would take New Haven five innings to get their first score.  Reeves Shumaker would single to start the inning then later score on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Sovine making the score 2-1.

Munster would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 5th.  Chris Slivka would reach base on a fielder’s choice and come round to score on a two out double by Scott Crilly extending their lead to 3-1.

New Haven would get one run in the 7th by scoring Nick Vachon on a passed ball but it would now be enough as Munster would hang on to win 3-2.

Terre Haute South 6  -  Mt. Vernon 4

Terre Haute South tops Mt. Vernon 6-4 Saturday to win the 9th Annual Braves Baseball Bash hosted at Terre Haute South High School.  Timely hitting and excellent pitching performances by Damon Olds, Jacob Johnson, and Timmy Herrin is what lead to the Braves winning their first Bash title since 2006.

The first couple innings went by without a run being scored and then Terre Haute South struck first in the top of the third.  A single by Spencer Whitlock got the ball rolling, followed by a walk issued to Colton Rupska.  Both Whitlock and Rupska scored on a two out double off the bat of Cody Brock making the score to 2-0.

Mt. Vernon put together a four run 4th inning starting with a lead of walk to Aaron Roberts.  Clay Ford would then single to put Roberts in scoring position.  Collin Varner followed with an infield single that lead to a throwing error to score Roberts. Ford would score on a passed ball tying the game at 2-2. Varner also scored on a passed ball a couple of pitches later giving the lead to the Wildcats. Bryce Newman walked and eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Jevin Redman making the score 4-2.

Terre Haute South answered back in the fifth with the help of Preston Tofaute.  Tofaute singled with one out scoring Whitlock and Rupska making things even at 4-4.  The bottom of the sixth, the Braves would score their final two runs that would give them their victory.  Jacob Johnson lead off the inning with a single, stole  second and scored on a single by Whitlock.  Rupska walked and scored on a throwing error giving the Braves their 6th and final run.

Terre Haute South's pitching performances led them win the Baseball Bash.  Damon Olds started and pitch the first three innings allowing one run, one hit while striking out 3.  Jacob Johnson picked up the win.  Johnson threw two and two thirds of an inning and only gave up three hits.  The save would go to freshman Timmy Herrin who made his first varsity appearance.  Herrin faced only three batters in the seventh. He struck out two and got the third to ground out to short for the final out of the ball game.
