Scouting Report
Probably had the best offensive day out of any Yellow Jacket hitter in the doubleheader on Saturday. From the right side, the former Future Gamer reached base in all four plate appearances from the leadoff spot during Game 1. He recorded a single in the 1st inning, but was hit-by-pitch in all of his next three at-bats. He did add in a stolen base, as well. During Game 2 versus Mississippi State signee LHP Pico Kohn, Robertson recorded two of the four Yellow Jacket hits in the game. The biggest hit of the game for Robertson & Oxford HS came in the 1st inning, when he tripled home a leadoff error. He worked the count with two strikes, and finally took advantage of an elevated fastball and showed quick hands to serve it into the LCF gap. Robertson did show some uncharacteristic defensive miscues on the day with a fielding & throwing error, but the athleticism continues to show up at the plate.
'23 SS Sam Robertson (No. 6) returns for the Oxford Yellow Jackets after logging some significant at-bat's as a freshman last year. Starting off his sophomore campaign, the former Future Gamer hit at the top of a talented Oxford lineup, where is high-level athleticism can be utilized the most. He reached base three times out of his four at-bat's and showcased great instincts while on the base paths. Leading off the bottom of the 1st, Robertson turned around 90 mph located down in the zone and roped it to left field for a hard-hit single (video below). After being hit-by-pitch in another at-bat and reaching 2nd on a wild pitch, he used his speed and instincts well, scoring from 2nd base on a heads-up play on an infield single to 1st base to score the game's first run. Wiry, high-waisted 6-foot-1, 170 pound frame.
6-foot-1, 170-pound athletic frame. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. Started in a tall stance with a smooth load, then used a leg kick. Has upward swing plane and efficient bat speed. Through his round he found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Advanced in the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 88 mph; has quick feet, twitchy hands, and a clean exchange. Laterally, his movements were athletic. Had a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. The athletic recruit showcased his speed with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.63. Tons of tools for the No. 5 ranked player in the '23 AL class.
6-foot-1, 165-pound mature frame. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.64. Began in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a small leg kick to initiate his swing. Has upward swing plane, explosive bat speed and good extension on his finish. Barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Robertson's 90 mph exit velocity showed his ability to drive the ball with power. Smooth in the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 85 mph; had athletic footwork, a quick exchange and next Level hands. Showed an-over-the-top slot with a very quick arm action.
