Top Pitching Performances Of 2018

Chris Kemlo
PBR Ontario Director of Scouting

We take a look at some of the top pitching performances we’ve seen over the last 12 months at PBR events. Whether it was an early bullpen in the new year, a clean inning of work at our Top Prospect Games or letting it eat in front of hundred plus scouts in Indianapolis at the PBR Future Games.

While this is just a few small sample sizes that stick out, we anxiously await 2019 to get rolling and new prospects making their names heard with standout performances on the bump.

Top Pitching Performances Of 2018

Connor O'Halloran LHP / 1B / St. Martins, ON / 2020

Where: PBR Future Games

Report: O’Halloran worked three innings versus Team Michigan at the Future Games in Indianapolis this August and was very impressive, showing the ability to throw all his pitches for strikes while keeping hitters off balance and changing speeds. O’Halloran drew plenty of attention from his outing and ended up committing to Michigan this fall.

Carter Seabrooke LHP / OF / Crestwood, ON / 2019

Where: Top Prospect Games

Report: Seabrooke, one of the top left-handers in the 19’ class was dominant at Niagara university for our Top Prospect Games, as he worked in the 84-86 range with his fastball, generating swings and misses while he secondary stuff was sharp and you could see the confidence he had that day. He piled up the strikeouts, and arguably had the quickest arm there. Committed to USC Sumter, look for Seabrooke to be one of the top arms in 2019.

Calvin Ziegler RHP / OF / St. Marys, ON / 2020

Where: Underclass Games

Report: Ziegler came out at the Underclass Games and was the top prospect in attendance, and did it on both sides of the ball. One the mound, he worked 86-87 with loose and easy actions while he flashed a sharp, 11/5 curveball with tight rotation and depth. There was bat speed at the plate from the right side and Ziegler immediately turned himself into one of the top prospects in the 2020 class. Currently uncommitted, Ziegler needs to have eyes on him and has the makings of being one of the top arms in the country.

Zachary Cameron RHP / 3B / Bishop Ryan, ON / 2019

Where: Top Prospect Games

Report: Cameron was one of the last arms of the day at TPG’s as he the two-way player manned the hot corner early on. He came in for his inning of work and sat 86-88 with his fastball while working one of the better changeups we’ve seen all year. There is still some polish to be had with his curveball but the feel was much better and Cameron had his complete arsenal working that day. To note, after his inning was over, he was right back at third laying out for balls and playing with the high compete, dirtbag approach we’ve seen numerous times. Committed to Niagara shortly after Top Prospect Games.

Hunter Campese LHP / OF / St Joan of Arc, ON / 2020

Where: Ontario Athletics Scout Day

Report: Campese stepped up at his club teams scout day and immediately jumped out with his quick arm from the left side and the ability to spin the ball with a curveball that shows promise with the action and shape. The body projects well to add size and strength, making Campese one of the top arms in the 2020 class.

Jacob Kush RHP / 2B / Guelph Collegiate Vocational, ON / 2018

Where: Ontario ProCase

Report: Kush came out at the ProCase and was his usual self, attacking hitters right away and was up to 92 mph on the day. Kush threw two breaking balls, with one being more of a slider and have the makings of being average pitches in the future that can put away hitter. Now at Northwest Florida State College, expect for Kush to be an impact arm this coming season and the velocity could continue to rise, especially if used in a bullpen role.

James Hiebert RHP / NA, ON / 2018

Where: Windsor Selects Scout Day

Report: Hiebert turned many heads early at the Windsor Scout day as the arm action was loose and clean, allowing the ball to come out the hand with some life as he was 83-85 with his fastball while showing feel and an idea for his secondary stuff in his bullpen. Both his curveball and changeup worked in 72-74 range and the body will get stronger, making for a very intriguing prospect as Hiebert ended up signing with Iowa Central CC and will be no surprise to see him make big gains in his freshman year.
