Top Prospect Games - Player Analysis - 2022/2023 Grads

The Top Prospect Games, originally scheduled for August 18th at the College of Charleston was rescheduled for the 31st. With impending weather the event was ultimately moved to Shipyard Park. The state of the art facility was able to host the event even with inclement weather moving through the area. The turf fields and indoor space were both used to evaluate all aspects of the event. Even with the inclement weather, schedule change, and location change over 45 of the top prospects from across the state showed up and showed out in front of the PBR scouting staff.

Owen Austin LHP / 1B / Wren, SC / 2022

5-foot-11, 155-pound; LHP/1B. On the mound, using a long arm action he showed lightning arm speed from an over-the-top armangle. He is a tall-and-fall type pitcher and uses some effort in his delivery. He produced afastball that came in at 80-82 mph; and topped out at 83 mph; which had consistentaccuracy and slight action. He threw his curveball with consistency at 71-73 mph; shows some action on his 1/7  curveball. His changeup regularly came in at velocities of 74-75mph. With matching hand speed.

 

 

 

 

Qwinton Bennett OF / RHP / Springvalley, SC / 2022

5-foot-8, 165-pound athletic frame; OF/RHP. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 81 mph.Setup is comprised of a big load and open wide stance. Has quick bat speed, a flat swing plane and a high finish. In the outfield, he showed the ability to make throws to the bases at 85 mph; had a developing exchange, quick footwork and sure hands. Showed a high ¾ slotand a compact arm action with some accuracy to the base. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked atime of 7.1. On the mound, showing quick arm speed he used a high ¾ arm angle and a shortarm action. He is a drop-and-drive type pitcher. He showed the ability to locate his curveball for a strike at 72-73 mph; curveball had some action. His fastball was 80-82 mph; and topped out at 83 mph; which showed occasional accuracy and hard action.

 

 

 

 

Preston Burnside SS / RHP / Bluffton, SC / 2022

5-foot-8, 140-pound slim frame; SS/RHP. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 77 mph. Began in balanced stance, had a choppy load and used a short stride just before his swing. Showed a flat swing plane, above average bat speed and a level finish. While in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 73 mph. Had a high ¾ slot and a consistent arm action. He clocked a time of 7.16 in the 60-yard dash. On the mound, he is a tall-and-fall type pitcher and uses some effort in his delivery. His fastball sat 70-71 mph; with a max of 72 mph; showed very consistent control. His changeup (61-61 mph) was most efficient when pitched in sequence with his fastball; changeup showed occasional fade. CB had depth when located in the bottom of the zone.

 

 

 

 

Rusty Chappell 1B / RHP / Abbeville, SC / 2022

6-foot, 210-pound sturdy frame; 1B/RHP. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 84 mph. Setup in open stance and had a short stride Shows quick bat speed, a level swing plane and a high finish. In the infield, his position velocity was registered at 65 mph; displayed softhands and heavy feet. Used a side slot with a loose arm action. He clocked a time of 8.2 in the 60-yard dash. On the mound, where he showed average arm speed to the plate, he had H3Q arm angle with a loose arm action. He is a tall-and-fall type pitcher who shows high effort in his delivery. His fastball came in at 65-66 mph; and topped out at 67 mph; tailing fastball has consistent accuracy and heavy action. Throws a sweeping slider none with consistent accuracy and sharp action. He threw his curveball with consistency at 58-60mph. When pitched in sequence with his fastball, his changeup (54-56 mph) can keep hitters off balance. 

 

 

 

 

Brent Gibbs 2B / OF / Spring Valley, SC / 2023

5-foot-5, 115-pound lean frame; 2B/OF. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 78 mph. Set up in balanced stance with a wrapping load. Showed a level swing plane, above average bat speed and a high finish. In the infield, displayed a velocity of 73 mph across the field; displayed rhythmic feet, next level hands and a clean exchange. Had a short arm action and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, he recorded a time of 7.39.

 

 

 

 

Jack Killelea C / OF / Legion Collegiate , SC / 2022

5-foot-9, 155-pound lean frame; C/OF. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. Had a smooth load then used a leg kick  Has a level swing plane, as well as quick bat speed and a high finish. While catching, he produced a pop time of 2.00-2.14; Showing very consistent accuracy to the bag, he used a high ¾ slot and a consistent arm action. During the event, he clocked a 60 time of 7.79. 


 

 

 

 

 

Hayden Lyons LHP / 1B / Sumter, SC / 2022

5-foot-11, 150-pound proportional frame; LHP/1B. On the mound, he showed average arm speed to the plate with a high ¾ arm angle and a long arm action. He is a tall-and-fall type pitcher who uses easy effort in his delivery. He threw his fastball 70-71 mph; and topped out at 72 mph;  which showed consistent accuracy and some action. He showed the ability to locate his curveball for a strike at 62-64 mph; shows a 11/5 curveball with slight action. He successfully located his changeup for a strike at 58-58 mph. 


 

 

 

 

 

Jes Schwedler C / RHP / Sumter, SC / 2023

6-foot, 155-pound lean frame; C/RHP. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 73 mph. Began in open stance, had a wrapping load and used a leg kick to initiate his swing. Displayed a straight-to-the-ball swing plane, above average bat speed and a high finish. While catching, his pop time was 2.13-2.22; Showing some accuracy to the bases, he had a loose arm action with a ¾ slot. He recorded a time of 8.46 in the 60-yard dash. 


 

 

 

 

 

Walker Taylor 1B / OF / May River, SC / 2022

5-foot-10, 160-pound lean frame; 1B/OF. During batting practice, the left-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 74 mph. Starts in wide stance with a smooth load, then uses a toe tap just before his swing. Exhibits quick bat speed and a flat swing plane, and he ends his swing with good extension on his finish. In the infield, showed an ability to throw across the field at 66 mph.  Showed a long arm action with a ¾ slot. During the event, he ran the 60-yard dash in 7.79. 


 

 

 

 

 

Blake Wall C / 1B / Georgetown , SC / 2022

5-foot-10, 180-pound; C/1B thick frame throughout. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 79 mph. Began in balanced stance, had a small load and used a short stride just before his swing. Exhibits quick bat speed, as well as a flat swing plane and a high finish. While catching, his pop time was 2.20-2.24; Had consistent accuracy to the bag and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 8.1.
