Top Stories of 2017: #5 - Early Commitment Trend Continues

Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

We receive commitments throughout the year from players in all parts of the state to colleges in all regions of the country. 2017 was a banner year for players across the state announcing their college plans and the trend of players making decisions earlier and earlier has continued.

To report future commitments, or ones not currently on our commitments list, please e-mail us at the address found here and/or tag us on your Twitter announcements. Over 200 seniors now know where they will be headed after graduation and that number will continue to rise through the spring. The group includes 64 right-handed pitchers, 21 left-handed pitchers, over 24 corner infielders, more than 45 middle infielders, and over 29 catchers.

In the Class of 2019, 54 players have verbally committed, compared to 47 juniors at this time last year. The ACC leads the race for recruits in this class with 15, followed by the Big Ten (7) and the SEC (5). Among individual schools, Kent State (4), Penn State (3) and Duke (3) lead the way. Right-handed pitchers also pace the commitments in this class with 15 having already made a decision.

Of the 55 players in our current Class of 2020 rankings, 16 have made commitments as they prepare for their sophomore season of high school baseball. Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Virginia Tech have each landed a pair of commitments out of Pennsylvania to date. Following a similar trend, nearly half of the commitments have come from pitchers.

The early commitment trend continues with current freshmen, as four players in the Class of 2021 have already announced commitments prior to their first inning of high school baseball. Virginia, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Georgia have each received one verbal commitment to date.
