Senior Spotlight: Archer Blumenschein

The 2021 Grad Class offers a lot of exciting arms and unique skillsets on the mound to watch out for in 2021 and beyond. Today we look at a couple right-handers who are going to make some noise throughout the province and should be able to carry that into the next level.

With these three long righties all have in common is they are all likely to continue to raise their numbers and pure stuff while still adding size and physicality to their frames.

Scouting Report

Updated Report: Blumenschein is a versatile athletic player from NAX Baseball Academy at ABJ Catholic HS and plays his summer ball with the Sherwood Park Athletics.  With a frame at 6-foot-1, 198-pounds, Blumenschein presents a body that is projectible and will continue to add strength as he continues to develop physically.    The RHP/3B has already shown to have a strong skill set and with continued development could become a good option almost anywhere on the diamond.  From the mound,  Blumenschein has paired good arm speed with a compact arm action and a regular intent delivery and the fastball has been up to 85 mph.  This will only continue to improve as Blumenschein continues to add strength.  Blumenschein has 2 off-speed offerings in his curveball that he commands well in the zone with a vertical break axis. His change-up has solid command and consistent arm side run at 78-79, that continue to sharpen up.  At third base Blumenschein has shown good mobility with sure hands and a quick arm across the diamond.  His swing at the plate is fluid and compact. He showed his ability to make consistent solid contact and his ability to hit the ball Gap to Gap.  Blumenschein’s efficiency in his bat path allows him to get to pitches anywhere in the zone. Blumenschein is a player to watch for as he continues to develop and sharpen the tools he has. An uncommitted 2021, he has the ability to help the right program at the next level as he is only going to get better.

6-foot-1, 198-pound projectable frame. In the box, Blumenschein had an exit velocity of 83 mph. Begins in an open stance with a smooth compact load, then uses a short stride before his swing. Bat speed was efficient, showed upward simple swing plane and level finish. Barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid while in the infield, made throws up to 79 mph; has a fluid exchange, average feet and consistent sure hands. Throws from a ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.69. Projectable on the mound, where he showed good arm speed, he had a short arm action and a ¾ arm angle. Feel type pitcher who uses some effort. Tall balance point with even shoulders. Lands square with a clean finish. Threw his fastball 83-85 mph; shows some action and decent control. Shows command around the zone and tight action on his 11/5 curveball (69-71). Has tailing action and arm side control on his changeup (78-79).

Listed at 6-foot, 200-pounds, big body, plenty of room to add strength and size to his current frame. The uncommitted 2021 showed good actions both on the mound and at the dish. Potential for big power from the right side, hands work well, bat speed is there and will continue to develop as he does physically. The uncommitted 2021 was a standout on the mound during our Edmonton showcase. Quick and short arm action, ran the fastball up to 81 mph, along with a developing breaking ball with tight spin. Moves well down the mound, gets out front well, repeatable and clean mechanics. There is definitely room to add velocity, showed good mound presence and command with all pitches.
