Scouting Report

10/21/18- 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Big projectable frame with athletic build. Slow and deliberate tempo in delivery.  Lands across body and falls of mound. Good extension out front. Throws from a ¾ arm slot with good arm action.  Fastball sits 85-87 mph with heavy run for strikes. Curveball has 11/5 break with tight spin and ok shape at 67-69 mph.  Change-up is 74-76 mph with fade action thrown for strikes. Follow arm in 2020 class.

3/17/18- 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Bustos has long limbs on his 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame, and could pack on even more strength in the future. Delivering out of a near ¾ slot, Bustos possesses a loose, whippy arm, and works free and easy. He was uptempo throughout his delivery stepping slightly across his body before pumping fastballs at 82-84. It looked harder than what the radar read, and with his long arms, he was able to get extended towards the plate. He dropped his slot a bit on the breaking ball which sat 68-69, but showed feel for a sinking changeup at 73-75. As he continues to grow into his frame, expect Bustos to make a jump, especially as he obtains more innings.

PBR: What schools have expressed interest in you?

Bustos: A number of Division 1 schools have expressed interest in me.  

PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future?

Bustos: I have not officially had any visits but I am looking forward to it.  

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Bustos:  Well coached baseball team with lots of great history as well as a campus that makes me feel at home.  

PBR: What were some of your highlights during your junior year?

Bustos: My Junior year baseball season has not officially started yet, but here are some of my highlights throughout the course of my time playing on varsity baseball:  

  • 2017 Rookie of the Year (Freshman season)  
  • 2017 Conference/ Section Champ  
  • 2018 Conference/Section Champ  
  • 2018 Honorable Mention 
  • 2018 Class 3A State Champ
  • 2018 All-Tournament Team

PBR: What are your goals for this year?

Bustos: With being one of the only two returning starters on the Mahtomedi Team this year, I look forward to having a rebuild season as Mahtomedi lost 14 seniors last year on the team. I want to bring my past experiences to the team that I will be a part of this season. I also look forward to playing on the Mariners Midwest Scout Team this summer!

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Bustos: I do not play any sports in high school other than baseball ,but I do play in a recreational basketball league to keep my body in shape during the cold months before the season. I also workout on a weekly basis with a personal trainer who puts the lift particularly for baseball including legs, hip rotation, and core.
