Scouting Report
6’3 220-pound big frame with current strength. Body continues to improve and with that, he’s running better and moving better around 1B. Put on a show during BP. Starts with an upright square stance, using a small leg kick to create momentum and athleticism. As the bat continues to develop, the already playable power will continue to increase quickly. Confidence is growing at 1B, along with the skill there. His football is improved, leading him to better hops to cleanly catch the baseball.
10/14/18 - 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame with natural strength. Could develop into physical monster. Has really started to clean up his body. Showed improved footwork around the bag at first base, also posting an 80 mph infield velo. Ankeney is a serious physical presence and showed the most raw power of any prospect at the event, regardless of class. Posted very impressive 93 mph exit velocity. Bat is clearly the carry tool, making consistent, hard contact out front with loose wrists and natural loft in swing. Potential premium power prospect. Want to see the raw power continue to show up in game action as he matures.
6/6/18 - 6-foot-2, 215-pounds. Big, sturdy frame. Obvious present strength in swing. Hands and back elbow work back and up as he strides out creating separation. Looking to do damage in the air, posture begins to lean back at moment of contact. Posted the top exit velocity at the entire event (91 mph) and connected on a rocket double to LF in live game action which was good to see as he’s always taken impressive BP. Defensively profiles best as a first basemen. Short, choppy steps moving around the bag. Could improve his rhythm and footwork. Posted a solid 80 mph infield velocity and 8.21 60-yard dash.
1/28/18 - 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame with impressive natural strength. Leg kick trigger varies in size. Loads hands deep and elbow high. Tended to get started late and make contact deep in the zone. Plenty of bat speed to handle velo if he starts gathering earlier; 90 mph exit velocity. Playable defender at first base. Moves around the bag well; shows some stiffness in hands. Made accurate throws on the infield with 78 mph velocity.
12/10/17 - Shows high-end raw power, but what stands out even more is the bat speed he shows for a prospect of his size. Ankeney posted the top exit velocity at the event at 89 mph as well as the top infield velo (80 mph). Standing 6-foot-2, 215-pounds, he has all the makings of a big time power bat as he continues to develop.
9/28/17 - 6-foot-2 210-pounds. Extremely physical for a freshman. Showed off very advanced rhythm and timing at the plate. Generates power with bat speed, not just strength. Defense should continue to improve over time. Bat will be carrying tool.
