Unsigned Senior Arms Steal Day at Brownsburg

Brownsburg--- #10 Brownsburg hosted the Ben Davis Giants on Monday night. Ben Davis didn’t waste any time putting runs on the board. Isaac Sampen (Purdue) walked Drake Duncan (Galveston JC) and Eric McKibban (Evansville) setting up Donovan Rhodes (Unsigned) to get a fastball at 88 and drive it over the center field fence for a three run homerun. Sampen’s day on the mound would be complete, giving the ball up to unsigned senior Jake Weimer. Weimer was 81-84 with a 66mph breaking ball throwing from an over the top arm slot. Weimer would throw 5 2/3 innings giving up only one run working out of several jams.

Ben Davis on the mound was Josh Turpin. Turpin is not an over powering arm, but he pitches and competes. He throws a lot of strikes and let’s his defense help him. Brownsburg struck for the first time in the second on a John Moore RBI single making the score 4-1. Brownsburg added another run on a Logan Coughlin opposite field homerun and scored another in the 5th on a Bobby Carr RBI single.

In the sixth inning, Brownsburg bats woke up. 9 straight hitters reached base safely scoring eight runs in total. Isaac Sampen delivered the big blow of the inning; hitting an opposite field three run homerun, extending the lead to 8-4. In all, Brownsburg would pick up 9 hits, 8 runs. Brownsburg would eventually win 11-4.

Unsigned Seniors Highlights

Donovan Rhodes 6-foot-5 RHP 87-88 77SL Rhodes displayed a good velocity jump from the summer and with his frame being so projectable it is easy to see why Rhodes could be one of the most sought after 2012’s yet to commit.

Jordan Deal 6-foot-4 RHP was the most interesting pitcher of the night. Deal works from a low 3/4 arm slot and gets heavy sink and arm side run. His fastball sat 84-86 and touched 87 a couple of times and hit 88 once. Deal is a high academic guy as well

Tyler Whetstone is a left handed hitting outfielder. Whetstone has a good frame with an athletic swing. Whetstone showed quick hands with decent pop driving a fastball into the right center gap.
