Vincentian Academy RHP/OF Jay Cortese's athleticism has been on display since early in his high school career. He has run a sub-7 60-yard dash, while also posting an 89-mph exit velocity and 90-mph arm from the outfield. However, impressive as those measurables are, his future may actually lie on the mound.
In the summer of 2013, as a rising junior, the 6-foot-1, 180-pounder flashed a mid-80s fastball, despite a delivery that pulled him off-line toward first base. He struggled to command his 11/5 curveball and a split-change that showed promise. Still, given his athleticism and long, loose arm action, Cortese's upside was evident
More recently, Cortese has harnessed his command while seeing his fastball tick up a notch or two, helping contribute to a junior season line of 23 hits, 14 walks, and 48 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched. In addition, he earned all-section honors as an outfielder after hitting .367 with a .474 on-base percentage (14 walks and hit-by-pitches, versus 11 strikeouts), and a .683 slugging percentage (including ten extra-base hits).
