VA/MD State Games: 2023 P Breakdown

In early November, over 140 players from Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina descended on War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia to take part in the 2021 VA/MD State Games. We continue our detailed breakdown of the event with the 2023 pitchers.

 

Aidan Brinsfield RHP / 1B / Parkside , MD / 2023

6-foot-1, 195-pound proportional sturdy frame. Above average on the mound, showed a short compact arm action and an over-the-top arm angle with quick some arm speed Tall-and-fall type pitcher who shows some effort. Displays in line shoulders with an consistent balance point. Lands square with balanced finish. Changeup (76-77 mph). Sat with his fastball at 81-83 mph; showed command feel around the zone and late tailing action. (Max spin 2260; Avg 2190). His 11/5 curveball (69-72) showed down in the zone control and some late action. (Max spin 2413; Avg 2199).

Seth Buchanan SS / RHP / Lebanon, VA / 2023

5-foot-11, 180-pound strong athletic build. Athletic confident on the mound, showing quick arm speed he had a ¾ arm angle with a compact quick arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows some effort. During his delivery balance point is tall with even shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Threw his fastball 81-84 mph; shows both sides of the plate feel command and late tailing action. (Max spin 2287; Avg 2204). Showed deceiving late action and arm side control on his tight 12/6 curveball (71-73). (Max spin 2096; Avg 1875).

Cayden Curry RHP / 3B / DeMatha Catholic, MD / 2023

6-foot-1, 165-pound long lanky frame. On the mound, used a long arm action with an over-the-top arm angle while showing consistent arm speed. Tall-and-fall type pitcher who shows decent effort. Showed strong balance point with even shoulders. Lands square with a clean finish. Threw his fastball 77-80 mph and topped out at 81 mph; has a heavy fastball that shows control down in the zone and sinking action. (Max spin 2138; Avg 2032). Threw a 12/6 curveball (66-70) that showed early action and around the zone control. (Max spin 2214; Avg 1948). Shows fading action and some command on his changeup (69-73).

Quinn Evans RHP / 1B / McLean, VA / 2023

 6-foot-2, 180-pound proportional long frame. On the mound, showed above average arm speed, also used a high ¾ arm angle with a longer arm action. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher who uses some effort. Displays uphill shoulders with an consistent balance point. Lands square with balanced finish. Sat with his fastball at 76-79 mph with a max of 81 mph; showed control around the zone and gradual action. (Max spin 2018; Avg 1890). Threw his 10/4 curveball (68-69) with decent control and slurvey action. (Max spin 2037; Avg 1921). 

David Fall RHP / 3B / First Colonial, VA / 2023

5-foot-10, 180-pound solid sturdy build. On the mound, showed some arm speed, he had a long arm action and low ¾ arm angle. Up-tempo type pitcher and uses decent effort. Has a tall balance point and even shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Knuckle (67-70 mph). Sat with his fastball at 76-79 mph with a max of 81 mph; showed slight running action and arm side command. (Max spin 1888; Avg 1802). Throws a 10/4 slider (72-75) with some action and decent command. (Max spin 1719; Avg 1643). 

Jakob Foster RHP / 3B / Patriot, VA / 2023

6-foot-2, 180-pound lanky proportional frame. On the mound, showed a loose clean arm action and a ¾ arm angle with quick consistent arm speed. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher who uses some effort. Showed strong balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 82-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; had feel both sides of the plate control and deceiving sinking action. (Max spin 2152; Avg 2058). His 11/5 curveball (68-70) had tight action and around the zone control. (Max spin 2156; Avg 2034). His changeup (79-80) showed sinking fading action and decent down in the zone control. Threw a 11/5 slider (74-76) with tight late action and decent down in the zone command. (Max spin 2058; Avg 1922). 

Lion Gardiner RHP / 2B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

5-foot-10, 160-pound projectable sturdy frame. Confident on the mound, showed lightning arm speed, he had a ¾ arm angle and a compact very quick arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher and uses high effort. Showed athletic balance point with downhill shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Sat with his fastball at 83-85 mph and topped out at 86 mph; has gradual tailing action and command arm side around the zone. (Max spin 2049; Avg 1936). Has feel control and tight late action on his 11/5 curveball (67-69). (Max spin 2317; Avg 2267). Threw a 11/5 slider (74-75) that showed command around the zone and hard action. (Max spin 2630; Avg 2573). 

Jacob Gerson RHP / SS / Woodrow Wilson, VA / 2023

6-foot, 180-pound lean mature frame. Fluid confident on the mound, showed lightning quick arm speed, he had a longer very quick arm action and a high ¾ ¾ arm angle. Uses some effort in his delivery. Tall balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Threw his fastball 84-87 mph; had late running action and some both sides of the plate control. (Max spin 2152; Avg 2064). Has a 11/5 curveball (67-72) that showed control around the zone and hard tight action. (Max spin 2428; Avg 2359). Had down in the zone control and sinking fading action on his changeup (76-78). 

Zack Gimon RHP / OF / Kettle Run , VA / 2023

6-foot-2, 175-pound proportional lean frame. Raw confident on the mound, showed consistent developing arm speed with a ¾ arm angle and a longer clean arm action. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher who uses decent effort. Balance is tall point with an even shoulders in his delivery. Lands square with balanced clean finish. Sat with his fastball at 79-83 mph; had late deceiving action and decent control. (Max spin 2237; Avg 2051). Has a 11/5 curveball (62-65) that showed decent command and gradual action. (Max spin 1791; Avg 1699). His changeup (75-77) showed some command and gradual fading action.

Luke Gouldthorpe RHP / OF / Jefferson Forest, VA / 2023

6-foot-4, 190-pound lengthy proportional build. Advanced projectable on the mound, using a long quick arm action he showed electric arm speed from a high ¾ arm angle. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher who shows easy effort. Has a tall strong balance point and in line shoulders. Lands square with a clean finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 87-89 mph with a max of 90 mph; has a heavy fastball that shows decent both sides of the plate command and late tilt action. (Max spin 2454; Avg 2271). Shows tight swing and miss action and around the zone decent control on his 11/5 curveball (72-74). (Max spin 2384; Avg 2151).  Was impressed with overall day by young arm and sure to be a top uncommitted arm remaining in the state. 

Michael Harpster RHP / SS / EC Glass, VA / 2023

6-foot, 150-pound athletic projectable build. Smooth confident on the mound, had a ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action with quick consistent arm speed. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who uses easy effort. Showed tall balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Threw his fastball 84-86 mph; had running action and control around the zone. (Max spin 2437; Avg 2351). His 12/6 curveball (70-71) shows down in the zone control and deceiving tilt action. (Max spin 2236; Avg 2131). Thought he had a really impressive day on the bump and one to keep an eye up for the upcoming 2022 year. 

Jase Howell SS / RHP / Nansemond Suffolk Academy, VA / 2023

6-foot, 190-pound strong proportional frame. Fluid on the mound, showed consistent arm speed with a high ¾ side arm angle and a longer arm action. Feel type pitcher who uses some effort. Has a low balance point with even shoulders. Lands square with recoil finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 77-80 mph and topped out at 81 mph; has slight sinking action and decent command. (Max spin 2139; Avg 1963). His 11/5 curveball (67-68) shows late action and feel command. (Max spin 1973; Avg 1933). Showed fading action and down in the zone command on his changeup (70-71). 

Mitchell Hwang RHP / 3B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

6-foot, 185-pound strong sturdy build. Smooth confident on the mound, showing consistent arm speed he used a quick consistent arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows some effort. Showed consistent balance point and downhill shoulders. Lands open with a clean finish. Threw his fastball 76-79 mph and topped out at 80 mph; shows deceiving sinking action and some decent control. (Max spin 2232; Avg 2133). Threw a 12/6 curveball (65-68) that showed deceiving late action and feel around the zone command. (Max spin 2168; Avg 2119). Shows fading action and feel around the zone command on his changeup (68-69). 

 

Finn Irving RHP / SS / Wilson Memorial , VA / 2023

6-foot-4, 165-pound long lengthy build. On the mound, used an over-the-top arm angle and a long arm action while showing some arm speed. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who uses easy effort. He has even shoulders with an consistent balance point. Lands square with balanced finish. Threw his fastball 79-81 mph; showed slight running action and both sides of the plate control. (Max spin 2070; Avg 1939). Throws a 11/5 curveball (68-71) with some slurvey action and around the zone control. (Max spin 2017; Avg 1991). His changeup (66-70) had down in the zone command and fading action. 

Owen Kashawlic RHP / Hayfield , VA / 2023

5-foot-10, 155-pound proportional athletic frame. Smooth fluid on the mound, used a ¾ arm angle with a longer quick arm action while showing above average developing arm speed. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher and uses some effort. Showed athletic balance point and even shoulders. Lands square with balanced clean finish. Threw his fastball 76-79 mph; had late tailing action and decent both sides of the plate control. (Max spin 2141; Avg 2043). Dagan Kitner RHP / 1B / Clarke County , VA / 2023

6-foot-2, 185-pound proportional strong frame. On the mound, showing consistent quick arm speed he had a longer loose arm action and a ¾ arm angle. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher and uses easy effort. Displays even shoulders with an strong balance point. Lands soft with balanced finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 83-85 mph; has late sinking action and command down in the zone both sides of the plate. (Max spin 2078; Avg 1981). Charlie Krebs RHP / 1B / Woodgrove, VA / 2023

6-foot-1, 210-pound physical sturdy frame. Advanced confident on the mound, showed quick arm speed, he had a longer arm action with an over-the-top arm angle. Tall-and-fall type pitcher who shows some effort. Displays in line shoulders with an tall balance point. Lands square with a falling off finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 85-88 mph and topped out at 89 mph; had hard late action and control feel around the zone. (Max spin 2125; Avg 2019). Michael Lewis OF / RHP / Steward School, VA / 2023

6-foot, 175-pound long lanky build. Solid projectable on the mound, showed a ¾ arm angle and a loose consistent arm action with quick arm speed. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher and shows some effort. Tall balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Threw his fastball 82-84 mph and topped out at 86 mph; showed both sides of the plate command and deceiving tailing action. (Max spin 2390; Avg 2295). Threw a 11/5 curveball (68-71) with command around the zone and tight deceiving action. (Max spin 2214; Avg 2155). 

Hank Lippman RHP / SS / Langley, VA / 2023

6-foot-1, 165-pound lean athletic frame. Projectable on the mound, showed quick arm speed with a short quick arm action and a ¾ arm angle. Tall-and-fall type pitcher who uses some effort. Displays even shoulders with an consistent strong balance point. Lands square with a clean falling off finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 79-82 mph; has a heavy fastball that shows tight running action and control decent around the zone. (Max spin 2162; Avg 2033). Trey Ludy SS / RHP / Cave Spring , VA / 2023

Garrett Mason RHP / OF / Mills E. Godwin , VA / 2023

6-foot-4, 195-pound long athletic build. Fluid projectable on the mound, used a ¾ arm angle and a compact quick arm action while showing lightning consistent arm speed. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher who shows some effort. Has a consistent balance point with even shoulders. Lands square with an athletic balanced finish. Threw his fastball 84-86 mph with a max of 87 mph; had late tailing action and both sides of the plate decent control. (Max spin 2192; Avg 2108). He shows feel control and tight deceiving action on his 11/5 curveball (71-73). (Max spin 2422; Avg 2340). His changeup (75-75) had down in the zone command and fading action. 

Ryan Perry SS / RHP / Calvert Hall, MD / 2023

6-foot, 175-pound solid proportional build. On the mound, showed quick consistent arm speed with a longer consistent arm action and an over-the-top arm angle. Feel type pitcher and shows high effort. During his delivery balance point is tall with even shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 81-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; has decent arm side control and deceiving tailing action. (Max spin 2174; Avg 2081). Has a 10/4 11/5 curveball (69-73) that showed decent around the zone control and tight late action. (Max spin 2278; Avg 2149). 

Jack Sague LHP / 1B / Bishop O'Connell, VA / 2023

6-foot, 180-pound long lanky build. Projectable on the mound, showed some arm speed with a longer arm action and a high ¾ arm angle. Up-tempo tall-and-fall type pitcher who uses some effort. In his delivery his balance point is tall with downhill shoulders. Lands square with upright finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 73-75 mph; had command decent around the zone and gradual running action. (Max spin 2051; Avg 1992). Throws a 1/7 curveball (63-64) that has decent around the zone command and gradual action. (Max spin 2137; Avg 2128). Shows fading action and arm side control on his changeup (67-71). 

 

 

Nathaniel Tyree OF / RHP / Liberty Christian, VA / 2023

5-foot-8, 140-pound lean frame. Capable confident on the mound, showed a short arm action and a ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed Up-tempo type pitcher who shows decent effort. Has an athletic balance point and in line shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Sat with his fastball at 74-76 mph; shows control around the zone and gradual tailing action with straight movement. (Max spin 1758; Avg 1690). Caden Ward SS / RHP / Great Bridge, VA / 2023
