West De Pere outlasts No. 12 Bay Port

By Alex Cheban and Spencer Flaten

DE PERE, WI- It took nearly three hours, and it wasn’t pretty, but West De Pere outlasted Bay Port 15-12 on Friday afternoon.

Bay Port’s lineup only featured a couple regulars, while West De Pere’s core starting lineup took the field. The Phantoms jumped out to an early lead by tallying 3 runs in the first inning, and 2 in the second, highlighted by a Brad Pierre 2 RBI single. They would extend that lead in the next three innings by pushing across 6 more runs, thanks in part to big hits by Matt Bald and Max Wickman.

The Pirates’ young lineup showed a lot of heart in the last three innings. Facing the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth, they put together a rally that eventually saw them tie the game at 12 apiece in the 6th inning. However, the Phantoms’ offense proved to be too much in the end, and a 2 RBI triple by Bald in the bottom of the 6th proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Bald finished the day with two doubles and a triple, while Wickman collected three singles on the day. Junior Brendan Meissner also added a double to the Phantom effort. However, the most impressive performance of the day came from Pierre. The senior hit for the cycle, going a perfect 4-for-4. He completed the cycle with a solo home run to push his RBI total to 4 in the game.

Sean Angle had two RBIs for Bay Port.

The Pirates (19-6, FRCC champions) and Phantoms (17-8, 3rd place in the Bay) now turn their focus to making a playoff run. Both teams earned a first round bye, and will find out their first postseason opponent on June 3rd.
