West Virginia University Announces 2014 Early Signing Class

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Randy Mazey became West Virginia University's 19th head baseball coach in June of 2012. His first season guiding the Mountaineers was a success as they finished 33-26 overall, and 13-11 in Big 12 action. The Mountaineers finished 3rd in the regular season standings and qualified for the Big 12 tournament.

Following the completion of the 2013 campaign, Mazey went about putting together his first recruiting class along with the help of assistant coaches Derek Matlock and Steven Trout. From all accounts their efforts were very successful.

According to Mazey, "There is a lot of balance in this class, but obviously at the forefront is pitching. There are a lot of Texas and Ohio kids, but not by design. We don't like to have boundaries, but Texas is Big 12 country and those kids know how good it is. We went into Pennsylvania and Maryland, and worked just as hard over there. There is a lot more ACC pull over in that direction, so it may take a little longer to get into those states."

The addition of West Virginia as a PBR state in May of 2013 is likely to make recruiting a bit easier for WVU and other baseball programs in the state. The Inaugural West Virginia Top Prospect Games and the PBR Mid-Atlantic Border Battle will both draw a large number of talented prospects from surrounding states to venues in West Virginia and Maryland this coming summer.
