With the 2019 spring season right around the corner, PBR Ohio is eagerly anticipating bringing the Buckeye state the best high school coverage throughout the entire state. Starting in January, we began releasing team previews for teams across the state, leading into the Preseason All-State Teams as well as the Preseason State Rankings.

2019 Spring Team Preview: Zanesville Blue Devils

Team Name: Zanesville Blue Devils
Head Coach: Dave Balo
Division: II
2018 Record: 14-14
Conference Record: ECOL, 9-5
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 5/2

2019 Team Strengths:

  • Catcher
  • Center Field
  • 1st Base

Coach Outlook: "We lose a lot from last year, having to replace 5 starters and 3 being starters since they were sophomores. We have holes open at SS, 2nd, LF, 3rd base where some younger guys are going to have to step up for us and play good baseball for us. We lose 3 of our 5 top arms from last year with Brock Cooper, Chayce Lundell who is now at Muskgingum and Brandon Pritchard now at Rio Grande all graduated but we return our day 1 starter in lefty senior Derrick Gibbons as well as senior Brody Rutledge who threw  last year as well."

PBR Outlook: Coach Dave Balo and the Blue Devils look to take a step forward from a 14-14 2018 season. With five starters returning, the Blue Devils have some experience back for 2019.

Top Returning Players:

  • Adam Mumaw, Catcher/3B 2020- 5'9/175, Junior, Going into his 3rd year starting. Batted.246 12 RBI last season in 22 games.  
  • Slade Norris LF/CF (SR)- 5'10, 170. batted.314 last season in 28 games with 6 RBI and is also going into his 3rd year starting. 
  • Derrick Gibbons P/RF (SR) 6'0, 205. E.R.A 1.53  Record last season  6-4 12 appearances. 3 year starting pitcher.
