Class 4A Supersectionals

Rockford RiverHawks Stadium Super Sectional

Prospect (26-8) defeated No. 5 Glenbrook North 8-2 (See Drake Skleba?s story)

 

University of Illinois Supersectional

No. 1 Providence (36-3) hit Edwardsville with a nine-run first inning and never looked back as the Celtics rolled to a 13-3 victory and advances to the Class 4A semifinals at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. Providence, from adjacent New Lenox, should have quite a crowd for their semifinal encounter with surprising Prospect (26-8) in Joliet at around 3 o?clock on Friday afternoon.

 

Against Edwardsville (29-10), as he did on Saturday against Downers Grove South, Indiana University-bound 3B Sam Travis got the Celtic party started in the top of the first. Travis doubled in the first two Celtic runs and later in the nine-run first, drove in a third run with a sac-fly. No. 9 Celtic hitter senior Dom Olszta matched Travis with three first-inning RBI, but Dom did it with a bases?clearing triple.

 

Celtic junior Zak Kutsulis also plated three Celtic runs. Kutsulis had an RBI single in the first and then went deep with a man on in the fourth to make it 11-0 Celts.

 

Celtic ace Northwestern-bound RHP Brandon Magallones (8-2) allowed three unearned runs in his four-plus innings of work. Celtic senior RHP Austin Vasquez and senior RHP Dan Wetzel finished up in relief for the top-ranked Celtics.

 

Crestwood Standard Bank Stadium Supersectional

No. 6 Mt. Carmel (32-7) slipped past Lincoln-Way East 9-7 on a two-run blast from the Caravan?s University of Kentucky-bound Jeff Boehm. Boehm hit a huge home run on Saturday against Oak Park to help lead the Caravan to the sectional championship.

 

Caravan junior RHP Tyler Laurisch went the distance allowing four earned runs. Indiana University-bound CF Chris Sujka had an RBI single for the Caravan. Lincoln-Way East bows out at 25-12.

 

Rockford RiverHawk Supersectional 2

No. 2 Lyons Township (35-4) defeated Streamwood 6-1 (See Drake Skleba?s story)

 

Class 3A Sectionals Championships

Crestwood Standard Bank Supersectional

No. 22 Oak Forest (26-7) smashed Jones 10-2. Bengal junior RHP Kyle Linares improved to 5-0 on the mound with 4 1/3 innings of shutout baseball. Linares allowed three hits before leaving the game due to back problems.

 

Kansas State University-bound Tim Barry drove home a pair for the Bengals. Bengal junior Kyle Sleeman had a two-run double and red-hot senior Bobby Sheppard had a perfect 3-for-3 day with an RBI.

 

Oak Forest will take on No.10 Nazareth (34-5) at 10 a.m. on Friday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet in the first of two Class 3A semifinals.

 

Naperville North Central College Supersectional

No. 10 Nazareth Academy (34-5) rallied past Wheaton St. Francis 5-4 (See Sean Duncan?s story)

 

Augustana College Supersectional

Kaneland (26-10) blasted Peoria Notre Dame 8-3 to send the N. Illinois Big 12 East co-champs to state for the first time in school history. Knight senior Drew Peters (5-3) allowed three runs in his six-innings of quality work on the mound for the Knights. Senior P Kyle Davidson slammed the door in the seventh on Peoria Notre Dame (27-7).

 

Knight seniors Bobby Thorson and Drew French each plated two runs for the Knights, who will meet Mississippi Valley Conference power No. 12 Waterloo (32-3). Waterloo defeated defending Class 3A state champion Chatham Glenwood 1-0 to advance to Friday?s approximately high noon battle with the Knights.

 

Sauget GCS Stadium Supersectional

There will be a new champion in Class 3A. No. 12 Waterloo (32-3) defeated defending Class 3A champ Chatham Glenwood 1-0, to advance to the Class 3A semifinals on Friday at high noon against Kaneland (26-10).

 

The Bulldogs picked up an unearned run against Glenwood?s Louisiana Tech-bound RHP Phil Maton (10-2). Maton?s error in the third led to Waterloo?s Garret Schlecht?s RBI single for the only run of the game.

 

Bulldog sophomore hurler Alex Wittenauer (5-0) and senior Brad Dillenberg combined for the two-hitter against the defending champion Titans.

 

Chatham Glenwood closes out the season at 29-11.
