First 2012 is off the board, and other news



The first Class of 2012 prospect is off the board when Oak Park-River Forest catcher Jack Picchiotti gave a verbal commitment to Purdue University. A starter since his freshman year, the left-handed hitting Picchiotti batted .431 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI as a sophomore last spring. Picchiotti, who has a strong arm behind the plate, tallied 8 homers as a freshman. …

Parkland College landed one of the biggest sleepers in the state when it got a commitment from Sam Thoele, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound RHP from Dieterich HS. Thoele features an 86-89 mph fastball and a quick arm. …

Parker Asmann, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP/INF from Lake Zurich HS, has committed to Evansville University. Asmann has been a two-year starter for the Bears. …

Former Marion left-handed ace Nathan Dorris has committed to Southern Illinois University. The 6-foot-4 Dorris, who was one of the top prospects in the 2009 class, went to Vanderbilt before transferring to Rend Lake College. Rend Lake also got a commitment from Jarrett Bednar, a 6-foot-5 RHP from St. Teresa HS.
