John Burroughs School Opens Season with a win

By Ethan Silverman

The Bombers of John Burroughs School overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Maplewood-Richmond Heights HS 9-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

""Starting pitcher Tyler Moon (right) went 5 strong innings, allowing only two hits and striking out 13 batters.  Moon over came three first inning errors that led to three runs, throwing five innings of no hit ball.

?I just went out to and tried to throw strikes. We were a bit rusty in the first inning. I thought we hit well and it will be a season long work in progress,? said Moon on his and the team performance. ?I knew I had a no hitter through five innings, and just tried to stay on my game and keep the ball down.?

""Burroughs chipped away at the 3-0 deficit, tying the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two out, two RBI double off the bat of Nick Buelick (left), scoring Bear Kaminer and Karlos Bledsoe.  The hit by Buelick was redemption for two errors in first inning.

On the rough start to the game, Buelick said, ?It took me a little while to get going in the field.? As for the game tying hit, ?I was looking for a good pitch to hit, and the pitcher threw one on the outside part of the plate and was able to drive it the other way. It felt good to pick up our pitcher and play good defense, especially when Tyler (Moon) was throwing so well. I am glad I was able to help pick him up?

Burroughs SS Robert Wright went 3-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, and LF Karlos Bledsoe contributed going 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Coach Katzman talks about the defense being the strength of the team, ?It was the first game here in St. Louis. We really didn?t have a very good first inning, and defense is one of our strengths. To go out and do what we did in the first inning was very surprising. But we settled down after that first inning, and did what we had to do. Tyler was great, and the only returning pitcher we have. He is our veteran, and kept the ball down while throwing strikes.?
