Today, we're wrapping up the National League's breakdown with the West Division, here's a look at how the 2017-2021 draft classes are shaping up using bWAR.

Collectively, the division has produced 84 Major Leaguers and a 68.1 WAR over those five drafts. These totals place the division fifth in total WAR and third in the number of Major Leaguers when compared among the six divisions of MLB.

The Diamondbacks rattle at the top of the division. Their 34.1 WAR represents just over half of the entire division’s production. They also boast the top two individual producers, as well as four of the top six in the NL West.

Individual Leaders (teams which they were originally drafted):

+ Daulton Varsho (D-backs, 10.5 WAR)
+ Corbin Carroll (D-backs, 6.6)
+ James Outman (Dodgers, 3.7)
+ CJ Abrams (Padres, 3.5)
+ Jake McCarthy (D-backs, 3.3)
+ Tyler Holton (D-backs, 3.1)

The Giants sleep in the basement, ranking 28th (of 30) for return on their $50.8M investment, falling all the way from ninth in 2022. The Rockies rank just ahead at 24th overall, but it’s an improvement from 2022 when they were dead last among all MLB clubs. In between, the Dodgers and Padres have similar total WAR accumulated, but the Dodgers spent around $23M less in signing bonuses from 2017-2021 to achieve their production. They rank 13th overall in ROI, while the Padres check in at 22nd.

Team ROI ($/1.0 WAR) Total WAR # of Picks to MLB
Diamondbacks $1,556,345 34.2 20
Dodgers $2,920,597 12.3 16
Padres $4,811,522 12.1 17
