Recruiting news from around the state:

 

Providence Catholic, the PBR?s preseason No. 1 team, now has 10 college commitments on its roster after junior OF Brady Wilkin gave a verbal commitment to Bradley University. The athletic Wilkin marks the seventh Division I commitment for the Celtics.

 

Ryan Rasmus, a 6-foot-3 left-handed hitting 1B from Homewood-Flossmoor HS, has committed to Prairie State. Rasmus showed as one of the top hitters at the Prep Baseball Report?s Unsigned Senior Showcase in January.

 

Three Prairie Ridge prospects have committed to McHenry County College: LHP Zack Coel, INF/RHP Adam Enwiya and OF Alex Martini.

 

Henri Desroisers, an OF from St. Charles East HS, has committed to Aurora University.


A few game highlights from the season-opener:

 

Mundelein won its season-opener, a North Suburban Conference crossover, 8-3 over Grant. Valparaiso University recruit RHP Ben Maher (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Mundelein. Mustangs Chris Maranto hammered a two-run shot and Austin Ozag belted a pair of doubles to pace the Mustang offense.

 

Bloomington Central Catholic exploded for three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat LeRoy 3-0 in nine innings. Senior SS Tim Coonan singled home the first run in the ninth and Connor Cox finished up his fourth inning of shutout relief in the bottom of the ninth. Cox (1-0) allowed one hit and fanned five. Senior Jesse Heaton pitched the first five innings for the Saints, striking out nine.
