No. 30 Edwardsville routs McCluer North

By Sean Duncan

SAUGET – Jordan Barnett set the tone with a leadoff homer, and senior right-hander Bill McFarland took care of the rest, as No. 30 Edwardsville routed McCluer North 10-0 in five innings in the second game of Friday’s Border War doubleheader at GCS Ballpark.

Edwardsville (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, spurred by Barnett’s opposite-field home run to right.  Barnett, a junior second baseman, also drove in a run in the second inning.

The Tigers scored six more runs in the fourth inning to make it 10-0. In the inning, McCluer North pitchers walked six batters and hit one. Edwardsville only had one hit in the inning – Andrew Spangenberg’s two-run double.

“They gave us a lot with walks,” said Edwardsville coach Tim Funkhouser. “I thought we did a pretty good job at the plate.”

Meanwhile, McFarland (1-0) completely baffled McCluer North (0-1). Behind a sharp slider, he struck out two batters in each of his four innings of work, allowing two hits and no walks.

“He threw well within the zone, and he got hitters to chase [the slider],” Funkhouser said. “I thought he did a good job competing out there.”

Zach Sedlacek contributed a two-run double in the first inning and Matthew Huelsmann went 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI. PBR first-team All-State third baseman Michael Failoni reached  base three times, scored twice and had a first-inning single.

Due to rain on Thursday, an extra game has been added to Saturday’s Border War schedule.
