PBR Unsigned Senior Showcase results



The Prep Baseball Report?s Unsigned Senior Showcase on October 17 at the Max featured a lot of impressive prospects from all over the state ? and uncovered some high-end players who should make impacts at the next level. The overall showing was impressive, proving once again that Illinois is one of the deepest talent pools in the country.

While there were many players there who established themselves as prospects, Matthew Borens, a 6-foot-7 RHP from Peotone HS, stole the show and earned the event?s top prospect honors. Mt. Vernon LHP/1B Weston Mason also was extremely impressive, and should be one of the more coveted unsigned left-handers in the state. Anthony Spangler, a physical RHP from Thornton Fractional South HS, showed the best velocity, topping at 88 mph, while his teammate, OF Bobby Calantuono, ran an event-best 6.58 60.

A look at the top prospects at the event:

1.)  Matthew Borens, RHP, Peotone HS, 2011 ? Borens was the biggest revelation at the Unsigned Senior event, and clearly should be one of the most coveted right-handers in the state. Borens is a lean 6-foot-7, 175-pounder with a lot of room to fill out.  His size and athletic frame alone make him an interesting prospect, but his fluid arm and command of three pitches elevate him into a high-level recruit status. Borens? fastball consistently registered at 85-86 mph with it seems a lot more in the tank.  Furthermore, he displayed a sharp-breaking curveball with good depth and command. Borens also showed a quality changeup with good arm action and late fade.

""2.) Weston Mason, LHP/1B, Mt. Vernon HS, 2011 ? Mason is a physically impressive athlete who should be one of the more sought-after unsigned seniors in the state. On the mound, the strong-bodied 6-foot-2, 205-pounder displayed a clean arm action with a fastball that consistently worked down in the zone, topping at 84 mph ? but clearly there is more. His best pitch, however, is his changeup that had late fade. He also showed feel for a 72-75 mph slider that has the potential to be an out-pitch as well. At the plate, Mason continued to impress with a quick bat and left-handed power potential. Mason showed his athleticism by running a 7.01 60, proving he very well could be a two-way guy at the next level.

3.) Anthony Spangler, RHP/3B, Thorton Fractional South HS, 2011 ? The physical 6-foot, 185-pound right-hander certainly made a big name for himself. Unknown prior to the event, Spangler was the best power arm at the event with consistent 87-88 mph fastballs. He also flashed a hard 76-77 mph curveball that had some late break. Spangler showed to be one of the top unsigned arms in the state.

4.) Jordan Nekola, RHP/OF, Mascoutah HS, 2011 ? Nekola exhibited a high three-quarter arm slot with clean mechanics and loose arm action. The lean 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander threw a heavy ball that topped at 85 mph, sitting consistently at 84. Nekola also showed a plus changeup that had late fade and arm-side run

5.) Bobby Calantuono, OF, Thornton Fractional South HS, 2011 ? The strong-bodied 5-foot-10, 170-pound outfielder showed that he is one of the premier athletes in the state when he posted an event-best 6.58 60. Calantuono showed he can do more than just run by displaying a strong arm from the OF that came in at 85 mph with carry.

6.) Samuel Klein, OF/RHP/SS, Burlington Central HS, 2011 ? Klein is an athletic, versatile performer who showed well in all facets of the game. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Klein demonstrated fluid outfield actions and good carry on his throws (85 mph). He also showcased soft hands and good lateral movement in the infield.  At the plate, Klein has an athletic setup and a quick, compact swing that produced line drives. On the mound, Klein has a lively, fluid arm and good mound presence. He works on a downhill plane, with a fastball that topped at 83 mph. Klein also ran a 7.23 60.

7.) Steven Zubrzycki, SS/RHP, Marian Central Catholic HS, 2011 ? The 5-foot-10, 150-pound two-way talent was clearly the best middle infielder at the event. He showcased a lightning-quick transfer, excellent lateral movement and soft hands while flashing an accurate, above-average arm strength (79 mph across infield).  Offensively, Zubrzycki showed a polished repeatable swing which produced line drives to all fields. On the mound he filled up the strike zone with a fastball topping at 83 mph and a curveball with good depth. He also ran a 7.07 60.

8.) Mark Goldsmith, OF/LHP, Byron HS, 2011 ? Goldsmith is a long, athletic left-handed hitting outfielder who ran posted an impressive 60 time of 6.89. Defensively, Goldsmith moved through the ball well and showed an accurate fluid arm. At the plate, Goldsmith has an athletic setup, as his bat whipped through the zone and found the barrel consistently.

9.) Austin Leggett, RHP, Grayslake Central HS, 2011 ? The 6-foot-2, 165-pound right-hander came from a three-quarter slot with a fastball topping at 84 with good arm-side run. Leggett showed feel for all three pitches, with good bite on his curveball and impressive arm action on his change.

10.) Cody Krilich, OF/SS/RHP, Thornton Fractional South HS, 2011 ? Krilich impressed with his overall strong showing in the outfield. He flashed the best arm strength for a position player (89 mph) while displaying fluid outfield actions. The athletic 6-foot-2, 170-pounder also showed solidly in the infield. At the plate Cody had good bat speed and whipped the bat through the zone.

11.) Tyler Lau, OF/2B, Cary-Grove HS, 2011 ? The 6-foot, 180-pound Lau is an athletic outfielder who ran a 6.96 60. Defensively, he showcased athletic actions and a strong, accurate arm with some carry (84 mph. He also swung the bat the well, showing a mechanically sound, quiet approach which produced consistent line drives.

12.) Tyler Sindewald, C, Thornton Fractional South HS, 2011 ? The athletic 5-foot-10, 175-pounder was the top catcher at the event, as he ran an impressive 7.02 60 in addition to showing incredibly quick feet around the plate. All Sindewald?s throws were on the bag, his best pop time registering at 2.13. Offensively, he showed good balance while staying inside the baseball.

13.) Daniel Ditusa, LHP/OF, St. Charles HS, 2011 ? The lean 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-hander showed good direction to the plate and a clean arm action with a fastball that topped at 80. He demonstrated feel for his change and his breaking ball showed good depth and can be an effective pitch.

14.) Mark Munizzi, C/3B, De La Salle HS, 2011 ? The strong-bodied 5-foot-11, 205-pound left-handed hitting catcher was arguably the best hitter at the event, as he displayed a quiet and explosive stroke with good extension. He produced solid backspin carry and demonstrated good barrel whip. Defensively, Munizzi showcased a quick release and a top pop time of 2.10.

15.) Kurt Kempema, LHP, Schaumburg HS, 2011 ? The 6-foot-4, 180-pound left-hander has an impressive pitcher?s frame and a lot of upside. Coming from a low three-quarter arm slot, his arm works fluidly and with little effort. His fastball topped at 80 mph, but looks as though there?s more in the tank. Kempema also throws a slurve which showed tight spin and good break.

16.) Michael Annerino, RHP/3B/SS, Marist HS, 2011 ? At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Annerino has an athletic pitcher?s frame and a loose arm. The right-hander showcased an over the top arm slot with a fastball that topped out at 82 mph. But clearly there is more in the tank. Annerino also exhibited one of the best breaking balls at the showcase, which displayed 12/6 break with late bite.

17.) Spencer Lehmann, RHP/1B, Minooka HS, 2011 ? At  6-foot-5, 215 pounds, Lehmann is an impressive physical specimen. On the mound, the big right-hander works downhill well, showing an 81-82 mph fastball. Offensively, Lehmann showed some pull power potential.

18.) Billy Meyer, RHP/OF, Fenwick HS, 2011 ? On the mound Meyer showed a short, quick arm that consistently registered at 82-84 mph with his fastball. Meyer also flashed a tight breaking ball which, when thrown for a strike, has potential to be an out-pitch. The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder displayed his athletic ability in the OF, moving well to the ball using his 6.92 60 speed. At the plate he displayed a compact swing that found the barrel consistently.

19.) Ty Weber, RHP/SS, Morton HS, 2011 ? The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Weber pounds the strike zone with three pitches. His fastball consistently registered in the low 80s, topping at 84 mph. Weber displayed a smooth high ? arm action and flashed a 12/6 curveball with tight, short break.

20.) Cody Mirabal, C/3B, Mount Carmel HS, 2011 ? The athletic 5-foot-11, 168-pound catcher showed good footwork behind the plate and received well. Mirabal at the plate showed bat speed and gap power that should play at the college level.  The younger brother of former Mount Carmel standout Matt Mirabal, who?s now at Illinois State, Cody also showcased his speed by running a 7.09 60.

21.) David Gow, 2B/OF, St. Charles North HS, 2011 ? The 5-foot-9, 150-pound Gow showed his ability to run when he posted a 6.83 60. Gow demonstrated he could also swing the bat, squaring up the ball consistently and spraying line drives to all fields. The athletic 2B displayed good hands and footwork in the field.

22.) Patrick Richards, OF/SS, Mt. Zion HS, 2011 ? A versatile performer, Richards showcased well in both the outfield and infield, displaying a solid arm from both positions. At the plate he had a level, line-drive swing. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound Richards ran a 7.0 60.

23.) Brad Clark, OF/RHP, Stagg HS, 2011 ? The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Clark showed a lively, accurate arm from the OF that came in at 84 mph. The left-handed hitter, who ran a 7.15 60, also showed quick hands at the plate.

24.) Casey McCallister, C/3B, Rock Falls HS, 2011 ? The physical 6-foot-1, 210-pound catcher exhibited some raw power potential at the plate, showing good extension through the hitting zone. McCallister behind the dish recorded a top pop time of 2.18.

25.) Brent Minta, C/RHP/OF, Aurora Christian HS, 2011 ? A versatile performer, Minta showed solidly in several facets. The lean 6-foot, 170-pounder looked solid at catcher, recording a top pop time of 2.13, in addition to showcasing a solid arm from the outfield (84 mph). In the box, Minta displayed a level line drive swing. On the mound, he topped out at 80 mph.

26.) Justin Wightman, RHP/OF, St. Charles North HS, 2011 ? The 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander displayed good balance throughout his mechanics and a fastball that came in at 81 mph. Wightman also showed a quality change up and curveball with some depth.

27.) Luke Coffman, MIF/3B, Chicago Christian, 2011 ? The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Coffman showed off his speed by running a 7.05 60. In the field Coffman displayed athletic feet and actions with an accurate arm. At the plate he displayed a level line drive swing with sound hitting mechanics.

29.) Chris Jordan, OF/LHP, De La Salle HS, 2011 ? At  6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Jordan possesses a long, athletic frame and intriguing upside. On the mound, the left-hander displayed a fastball that had some run and feel for his change. Offensively, Jordan displayed some bat speed and barrel whip through the zone.

28.) Zach Wiseman, RHP/INF, De La Salle HS, 2011 ? showed an easy, high three-quarter arm action. His fastball sat at 81-82 mph with some late life, while he flashed a tight 67-68 mph curveball with some depth. He also showed feel for a changeup and the ability to repeat his mechanics.

30.) Michael Krzus, RHP/OF, Sandburg HS, 2011 ? The lean 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-hander displayed a smooth long arm action with some life on his fastball, topping at 82 with some arm-side run. Krzus? curveball showed some bite and depth and had a feel for his change.
