Prospect watch and other recruiting news

One of the fastest-rising prospects in the Class of 2012 is Ryan Borucki from Mundelein HS. At a wiry 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, Borucki is a projectable LHP who possesses a loose, quick arm and the ability to throw three pitches for strikes. During the Fall Prospect Program, Borucki has been nothing short of impressive, as his fastball has climbed as high as 86 mph, sitting comfortably at 82-85 mph. His changeup, which has late fade, also has the potential of being a plus outpitch. Borucki struck out two of three batters he faced in his first inning of Sunday’s games on changeups. He struck out four in two innings work.

Borucki is still growing and has yet to fill out physically. As he physically matures, Borucki should continue to watch his velocity climb over the next two years and, consequently, be one of the most coveted left-handers in the state. …

Another Class of 2012 pitcher who has continued to watch his stock climb is Kyle Funkhouser, a 6-foot-2 RHP from Oak Forest HS. Funkhouser made a big splash as a sophomore, when he posted a 9-1 record with a 1.55 ERA for the Bengals. Over the summer and fall, Funkhouser has been up to 90 mph, sitting at 87-88. With Funkhouser on the mound and slugger Tim Barry at the plate, Oak Forest will definitely be a team to watch next spring. …

Adam Walton from Stevenson HS has quickly elevated his status as one of the highest-ceiling middle infielders in the Class of 2012. A slick-fielding shortstop, Walton is one of the premier athletes in the class, as he ran a 6.7 60 on a slow track at the Fall Prospect Program. Speaking of speed, Stevenson should be awfully difficult to defend next season, as the Patriots also have unsigned senior OF/INF Michael Martin (6.52 60), who very well may be the quickest athlete in the 2011 class. …

In other recruiting news, Parkland College landed two more prospects when it received commitments from Mahomet-Seymour C Alex Smith and 6-foot-3 left-handed hitting 1B Adam Casson from Pontiac HS. Smith joins Mahomet-Seymour teammate LHP Jason Ziegler, who had earlier committed to Parkland.
