Purdue lands 2 more 2012 prospects, and more

Purdue University picked up its third Illinois Class of 2012 commitment recently when it received verbals from St. Rita RHP Eddie De La Riva and Neuqua Valley OF Jack Amaro. De La Riva, a long and extremely loose 6-foot-2, 165-pound right-hander, posted a 5-2 record as a sophomore on the Mustangs? Class 4A runner-up squad. De La Riva enjoyed a strong fall in which his velocity climbed into the upper-80s to go along with a plus breaking ball. De La Riva is one of the most projectable right-handers in the junior class.

Amaro, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete, also enjoyed a beneficial fall season. Amaro had flown under the radar for much of his sophomore year, but proved to be one of the premier athletes in the class, running a 6.7 60, in addition to showing a strong bat from the right side.

Amaro and De La Riva join Oak Park-River Forest left-handed hitting catcher Jack Picchiotti in Purdue?s strong 2012 class. Purdue also received a commitment earlier from LHP Jordan Minsch, who?s the No. 2-ranked junior prospect in Indiana. Minsch attends Highland HS.

Nick Andros, a 6-foot-6 LHP/1B from Goreville HS, has committed to Rend Lake JC. Andros was the driving force behind the Blackcats? third-place finish in Class 1A last spring, both on the mound and at the plate. Using a low-80s fastball and an effective curve, Andros finished 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 75.2 innings. At the plate, he batted .398 with 14 home runs, 11 doubles and 47 RBI.
