St. Laurence's Kyle Wood earns Porsche Exchange Player of the Week honors



Wood has propelled No. 3 St. Laurence to an incredible 19-1 start as of Monday, April 26. The 6-foot, 200-pound junior has established himself as one of the premier two-way talents in the state, and is overall performance last week was a microcosm of his entire season.

A left-handed pitcher and outfielder, the Purdue recruit opened the week by throwing a one-hit shutout against Fenwick. His no-hit bid was broken up with a single in the seventh inning. Wood struck out nine, walked one and hit one batter. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base. On Wednesday, Wood went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored against St. Francis De Sales. On Saturday in a showdown against Mount Carmel, Wood went 2-for-2 with a pair of two-run homers to lead the St. Laurence to a 7-6 victory and keep the Vikings unbeaten in the Chicago Catholic League. He also tallied four RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base.

For the season, Wood is hitting an astounding .580 with nine home runs, eight doubles, three triples and 35 RBI. He has a slugging percentage of 1.400, an on-base percentage of .646, in addition to 28 runs and only two strikeouts. On the mound, Wood is 4-0 with a 2.59 ERA. In 27 innings, he has 30 strikeouts.
