Southwestern Conference action opened on Tuesday, and preseason favorite No.14 Belleville West (2-1, 1-0) made the crystal ball gazers look good, knocking off defending-champ No.30 Edwardsville 6-1. Senior LHP Sean Hulse (1-0) fired a complete game five-hit gem at the Tigers. Hulse allowed one earned run and struck out seven. The Maroons were led offensively by juniors Kane Sweeney and Garret Schlecht. Sweeney had two hits, including a double and drove in a pair of runs. Schlecht had a huge triple and a pair of RBIs for the victorious Maroons. Edwardsville was led by senior 3B Michael Failoni, who was 1-for-3 and drove home the lone Tiger run.

 

In other Southwestern Conference action, Granite City’s 6-foot-3 LHP Zac Pearman fired a no-hitter and struck out 10 as the Warriors blanked Alton 8-0. Pearman walked a lone Alton batsman as the senior improved to 3-0 on the season and the Warriors improve to 7-0…..No. 32 O’Fallon evened up their record at 4-4 with a 6-3 win over Belleville East.

                                                                                                        

Decatur St. Theresa sophomore Bobby Boyton was perfect on Tuesday against Central A & M. The sophomore struck out 14 of the 15 A&M hitters he faced in a 10-0 five-inning  perfect game. With two outs in the first inning Boyton allowed the only contact to A & M closing out the inning on a ground out. Boyton struck out all 12 of the remaining A&M hitters. Decatur St. Theresa (2-2) scored the 10th and final run in the bottom of the fifth.

 

West Chicago’s junior Jerrick Habecker launched a grand-slam homer to lead the 3-1 Wildcats past No. 21 Plainfield North, 7-3, in West Chicago. Habecker also picked up the win on the mound for the surprising Wildcats.

 

No. 21 Plainfield North bounced back from its defeat to West Chicago and stunned No. 8 Providence 10-7 in Plainfield on Tuesday afternoon. Junior RHP Sean Renzi (2-0) struck out nine in five innings to pick up the win. Senior Alex Molek hit a three-run shot and senior Scott Vachon (St. Xavier) homered and drove in a pair of runs for the 4-1 Tigers. Providence junior Matt Trowbridge hit a three-run homer for Providence (4-2).

 

No. 1 Naperville Central rolled past Oswego 14-1 behind a pair of homers from senior third baseman Marc Mantucca and senior right fielder Bobby Czarnowski. Mantucca launched a three-run bomb in the second. Czarnowski’s shot was a two-run blast in the first inning. Sophomore RHP Ian Lewandowski (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the 2-0 Redhawks.

 

Lake Park (1-0) won its season-opener, 11-8, over Prospect. Junior Anthony Valldeparras drove home four runs for the Lancers with a triple and a pair of singles. Evansville-recruit senior Peter Spear chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBIs.

 

No. 26 Minooka’s Texas University recruit Mike Foltynewicz hammered two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the 4-1 Indians to an 11-4 victory over Joliet. The future Longhorn drove home six for the Indians. Senior Joe Pershey (2-0) picked up the win on the mound.

 

No. 10 New Trier’s junior LHP Charlie Tilson threw a no-hitter with seven Ks, as the defending Class 4A champs won their opener over Anna-Jonesboro 10-0. Senior Gordie “The Invisible Man” Campbell drove home five runs with a double and a triple to lead the Trevian offense. Junior LHP John Cook (1-0) fired five shutout innings as the Trevians defeated Zion Benton 2-0 in a second contest in Marion, Illinois.

 

Andrew (4-1) won an old-fashioned slugfest 19-13 over Oak Forest on Tuesday. Andrew senior Jeff Zimmerman led the T-bolts onslaught with a grand slam and a solo shot for a huge five RBI day.

 

No. 46 Mundelein (5-0) defeated Carbondale 12-2 to remain perfect on the Mustangs Spring Trip to southern Illinois. The Mustangs have already defeated perennial-downstate powers Du Quoin 8-2 and Cobden 11-1. Mundelein concludes their trip at Danville today at 2.

 

No. 29 Grayslake Central (5-1) concluded the Rams’ spring trip, a little further south than Mundelein’s, picking up a pair of victories at Disneyland in Orlando, Florida. The Rams blasted Methacton (Pa.) 8-2 and then squeezed past James High School of Dublin, Ohio 3-2. Seniors Nick Richter and Kenny DeRue picked up the wins on the mound for head coach Troy Whalen’s Rams

 

No. 7 Stevenson (3-0) held on to defeat Glenbrook South 4-3. Junior Tyler Radtke struck out 10 in 5+ innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs. Senior Kory Cutler homered for the Patriots.

 

J nior left-hander Sean Stutzman struck out 14 and allowed one hit in leading Fremd (1-3) to a 7-0 win over No. 50 Clemente.Senior Clint Terry hammered a two-run homer and had a pair of hits to lead the Vikings attack.

 

No.11 Barrington (4-3-1) slipped past Huntley 2-0. 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher Sean Buchholz (John A. Logan JC) improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing three hits in five innings of work. Buchholz struck out three.

 

Burlington Central (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season at Centralia 4-1.

 

No. 9 IVC improved to 5-0 as the Grey Ghosts, behind junior Dan Semnter two-run homer, defeated Rock Island Alleman 9-6.

 

Defending Class 2A champion Stanford Olympia fell again; this time to Morton 12-4. Morton’s 6-foot-3 sophomore LHP Will Headean struck out 13 Spartan hitters and gave up six hits as the Potters rolled past the defending champs. Morton improves to 3-1.

 

Nashville improved to 7-0 as the Hornets Tyler Meyer had quite a day. Meyer hit a grand slam and drove home seven runs, as the Hornets pasted Woodlawn 15-3.
