Uncommitted Prospect Watch: RHP/OF Nick Edwards

A trio of Archbishop Moeller players stood out at Prep Baseball’s Open ID event at Prasco Park a month ago. With the school year underway, the three find themselves uncommitted and gaining attention as the contact period resumes.

With outfielder Ryan LeFevers (previously featured), infielder Jordan Simpson, and two-player Nick Edwards, Moeller’s storied program is set to aim towards yet another state championship and continue sending student-athletes to the next level.

Prep Baseball Report caught up with the three players for their thoughts on the PBR event, the recruiting process, and playing for Moeller. In addition, Tim Held, the head coach at Moeller, provided his thoughts on each of the young men.

This is the second part in a three part series.

Now, we focus on right-handed pitcher and outfielder Nick Edwards.

Coach Held on RHP/OF Nick Edwards:
“He saw more innings on the mound for us in 2011 than in the outfield. Nick is a tremendous athlete and he runs, throws and hits above average. He has good mound presence and should throw a lot for us again this season. His fastball was clocked in the spring of 2011 at 82-84 mph and his curveball is very good with 12-6 movement. He definitely has a right fielder's arm in the outfield and will challenge for that spot depending on how he hits. If he makes a couple of adjustments with his swing, he will have a great senior year.”

Nick Edwards Q&A with PBR
PBR: What was it like and what were your thoughts in participating in PBR’s first southwest Ohio event?

Edwards: It was fun to be part of PBR’s first showcase in SW Ohio. It was well run and it’s always fun to play at Prasco park.

PBR: You showed you were one of the top athletes in registering one of the top 60 times (6.87) and throwing velocities from the OF (86), do you play any other sports?

Edwards: I have played football and basketball in the past. I played football up until last year, but have decided to just focus on baseball this year.

PBR: In 2011 at Moeller, you were a pitcher first and fielder second. How do you view yourself and do you prefer one over the other?

Edwards: I enjoy both positions but my preference would be outfield, I like playing every day and hitting.

PBR: How competitive of a team is Moeller internally where you have a senior class with LeFevers, Simpson, and Wright State commit Bradley Macciocchi? Do you guys each push each the other?

Edwards: Moeller has a great baseball tradition, we all work hard every day to improve and because there is so much talent it makes it very easy to be competitive and push everyone.

PBR: What’s it like playing for Coach Held and the tradition-rich Moeller program?

Edwards: It has been great; expectations are very high for Moeller baseball. It will help prepare me for college baseball.

PBR: What schools have shown interest in you?

Edwards: I have been hearing from the Ivy League, MAC, the Big Ten, Military Academy’s and several DII conferences.

PBR: What goals do you have as your senior year approaches?

Edwards: Work hard, make positive contribution to the team and prepare for college.
