Class 4A Sectional Semifinals

TBA Sectional @ La Salle-Peru

Minooka’s 6-foot-5 senior RHP Mike Foltynewicz (9-1) did it all for the No. 7-ranked Indians in Wednesday’s La Salle-Peru version of the IHSA’s Class 4A TBA Sectional semifinal. Foltynewicz fired a two-hit shutout and blasted a game-winning two-run bomb in the sixth to lead the Indians to a 2-0 win over Moline (18-17). Foltynewicz struck out 15 Maroons in leading Minooka (31-7) to the sectional final against No.12 O’Fallon (24-13).

 

TBA Sectional @ Edwardsville

No. 12 O’Fallon defeated No.15 Granite City 4-1 in its Class 4A sectional semifinal on Wednesday. The Panthers were led by their senior ace RHP Miles Quintal. Quintal struck out 10 and fired a five-hitter in leading the Panthers to their third victory over their Southwestern Conference rivals from Granite City (26-10). Quintal helped himself with an RBI single and got help from junior Sam Summerlin and senior Cal Stierwalt who plated Panther runs.

 

Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year Granite City’s Jake DePew homered, his 13th round-tripper of the season, for the only Warrior run. Warrior senior RHP Cody Daily (7-3) suffered the loss.

 

Barrington

No.3 Stevenson (32-3) rolled past Mundelein 8-1 behind Northwestern-bound Kyle Ruchim and senior RF Erick King. King blasted his third homer of the season, with two on in the first inning, and Ruchim allowed four hits and struck out nine in his six-inning stint.

 

Niles West

Central Suburban South Champs Maine South (26-10) edged Notre Dame 2-1 behind Air Force Academy recruit senior RHP Jesse O’Connor (9-0), who struck out four in a complete-game performance. Notre Dame bows out at 26-11.

 

St. Rita

No.17 St. Rita (29-9) rolled past De La Salle 6-1 behind NIU-bound senior LHP Anthony Andres (9-3), who struck out nine in a complete-game gem. Sophomore 3B Stefano Belmonte hit a two-run homer for the Mustangs. 

 

St. Laurence

The red-hot Andrew T-Bolts continued to roll, defeating upstart Lincoln-Way North, 6-2, behind senior LHP Harry Doherty (8-2) and Eric Elget. Elget hammered a three-run bomb in the first to get the party started for the ‘Bolts. Doherty fired 5 1/3 solid innings on the mound to pick up his eighth win of the season. Lewis University-bound RHP Tom Durkin picked up the save for the 26-10 T-Bolts. Lincoln-Way North finishes a stellar season at 22-12.

 

Elgin Larkin

Huntley (27-9) routed Rockton Hononegah and their ace Valparaiso University-bound RHP Ryan Scarpetta, 11-3. The Red Raiders were led by their John A. Logan J.C-bound C Phil Pupillo. Pupillo had two hits and drove in four Red Raider runs as Huntley ended the sensational career of Scarpetta (8-3). Red Raider senior 1B Tom Crohan teamed up with Pupillo, collecting three hits and three RBI. Hononegah closes out a NIC-10 championship season at 28-7.

 

 

Class 3A Sectional Semifinals

Mt. Zion

No.5 Chatham Glenwood (28-4) survived and advanced with a 2-1 win over Normal U-High behind their sensational junior RHP Phil Maton. Maton fired a three-hitter at the Pioneers and struck out 16 to pick up his 10th victory of the season without a defeat. Normal U-High closes out at 23-11.

 

Mt. Zion

Danville (22-11) scored five times in the fifth on only one hit to rally past Lincoln 5-3.

Viking junior RHP Cody Burton (3-3) scattered eight hits in his complete game over the Railsplitters. Danville will meet Chatham Glenwood in the sectional championship game on Saturday at 11.

 

Belleville Althoff

Troy-Triad (22-16) hammered Effingham 10-2 behind Knight senior Travis Felix, who fanned 10 Flaming Heart batsmen and fired a seven-hitter. Knight senior OF Donny Furhop hammered a two-run homer. Effingham bows out at 26-8.

 

Belleville Althoff

Mt. Vernon (29-6) cruised past Centralia 5-3 behind Southern Indiana University-bound RHP James Mulvaney. Future Screaming Eagle Mulvaney gave up three runs in the first inning to Centralia (19-12) and then blanked the Orphans the rest of the way. Hard-hitting junior Pierce Borah had the game-winner with a two-run double in the sixth to give the Rams a 4-3 lead. SIU-Edwardsville-bound catcher Brian Sipe provided insurance when he singled in Borah to conclude the scoring.

 

Joliet Catholic Academy

Defending Class 3A Champion Joliet Catholic Academy (21-14) took another step closer to returning to Silver Cross Field in Joliet to defend its title, as the Hilltoppers rallied past Richards 9-6. Hilltopper senior John Gerl led the JCA attack with a big two-run triple and plated another JCA run with a double. Senior Anthony Chignoli homered for JCA and junior Kyle Cunningham had three hits and an RBI. Head coach Jared Voss’s Hilltoppers will meet today’s winner between Lemont (25-8) and Oak Forest (25-7) for the sectional championship on Saturday morning at 10. Richards closes out a sensational season at 28-10.

 

East Peoria

Streator (29-6) defeated No.20 Rock Island 8-7 behind senior LHP Drew Sabol. Sabol allowed four hits and four earned runs while striking out 11 to improve to 12-0 for the Bulldogs. Diamond Dog OF Zac Gayon had three hits, including a three-run homer, to lead Streator to victory. Rock Island bows out at 31-5.

 

East Peoria

Red-hot Galesburg (25-13) routed Metamora 13-6 behind Streaks Andrew Steck and Nick Milligan. Steck homered and drove in three for Galesburg. Milligan had three hits and plated four runs for Galesburg. Galesburg and Streator will play for the sectional championship at high noon on Saturday.
