3/28/2019 Spring Scout Blog: Made his first regular start last week and it went how you would expect. He worked five innings, striking out 14. He didn’t allow a hit or a walk and had one three-ball count in the game. He hit 91 five times in the first inning and sat 89-90 in the second and third. He was still hitting 90 in the fifth. He threw a curveball and slider, with the latter being in consistent at 79-80. The curveball was his best pitch of the night, sitting 75-76 and showing good depth and he threw it any count. He also introduced a split-changeup, which was good, but he didn’t need it much.

4/14/2019: Louisville commit, ranked No. 1 in Indiana’s 2019 class and No. 22 in the 2019 PBR Overall Rankings. 6-foot-2, 210 pound frame. Fastball was up to 91 on multiple occasions, holding 87-89 throughout most of his outing. His go to off-speed pitch was his curveball which was anywhere from 74-78 with a spin rate of 2600-2650 according to trackman; the MLB average is 2,308. He didn’t have the start we’re accustomed to seeing, as he allowed seven hits in his four innings of work. He ended up striking out six with no walks. Despite giving up the most hits he’s allowed this year and multiple errors and miscues by the Southport defense, Short held his composure well. Short threw 84 pitches; 61 for strikes.

4/25/2018: The top ranked 2019 in Indiana and Indiana commit Avery Short continued his dominance on the mound Tuesday evening facing off against No. 7 Columbus North.  The 6-foot-2, 215 pound southpaw came out sitting 87-89, topping out at 91 in his first inning of work. Short walked two in the first, a rarity for him, tending to miss up in the zone with fastball.  He quickly settled in however, striking out the side.  He had great feel for his off-speed, throwing a 1/7 CB at 73-75 with depth getting many called strikes and swing and misses.  His slider was sharp at 77-79 while the CH showed good fade action.  He has advanced feel for the strike zone with all pitches.  By the 5th he settled in at 84-87, still running it up to 88 when he needed to reach back and let one go.  Short finished the evening throwing 7 innings, allowing one hit (a bunt), three walks while striking out 15.  In his last three outings combined Short has pitched 20 innings, allowing 5 hits, 5 walks, 2 Runs with 40 strikeouts. Short is quickly solidifying himself as one on the top LHP's in the all the 2019 class, and will be a high follow this summer for scouts as they prepare for next year's MLB draft.

2/18/2018: 6-foot-2, 210 pound left-handed pitcher continued to impress on Sunday showing an increase in fastball velocity.  Fastball sat 87-89, touching 91.  Up twenty pounds from last year, his frame and mound presence is up there with the best of the best.  Short has clean, easy delivery down the mound.  Lower half stays in line, transferring energy well.  Short arm action into a high 3/4 slot.  Finishes athletically.  Repeatable delivery.   Slider is a plus out pitch, showing late depth and sharpness at 76-77mph.  He has feel for his curveball that shows a true 1/7 shape and good rotation at 72-75mph.  Change-up has some arm side fade.  Plus pitch ability and feel for the strike zone.  Short continues to climb up the ranks as one of the top left-handed pitchers around.  Indiana recruit.

10/19/2017 JUPITER: Durable, 6-foot-2, 190-pound Indiana recruit turned in one of the better performances of the event against a tough opponent, and set the stage for what may become a breakout spring. The left-hander has been up to 89 mph from a high ¾ slot, and his clean and repeatable delivery make it easy for him to repeat everything while delivering consistent strikes to the bottom of the zone. He features two different breaking balls including a curveball with 1/7 shape at 71-73 that he throws for strikes, as well as a harder slider with more sweeping, 2/8 shape at 75-77. Toss in a changeup at 81-83, and Short is featuring four pitches for strikes when at his best. His ability to get in on right-handed hitters, and overall command to his glove side should have fans in Bloomington excited for a potential weekend starter.

2017 Area Code Workout: Up to 89 sitting 86-88.  Potential plus breaking pitch with 1/7 shape for a K at 71-73.

2017 Spring Scout Blog:  Indiana commit. Strong 6-foot-2 LHP pitches from a high 3/4 slot with an easy, repeatable delivery. Shoulders are slightly uphill. Short arm with stab on the back. Fastball did flatten at times, but flashed good run and cut. Fastball was 81-84 in the first three innings and 80-83 in the sixth. Breaking ball had both 1/7 and 2/8 sweeping shape and thrown 69-71 down and away to RHH. Final line: CG 7IP 5H 2BB 8K

2/21/2016: 6-foot-2, 190 pound lefty pitches from a high 3/4 arm action with above average arm speed.  Stab on the backside.  Clean delivery with good deception. Smooth rhythm, uphill shoulders.  Good direction to the plate, lands square.  Fastball shows some run/cut action at 80-83.  Sweeping breaking ball with sharp break at 69-71, kept in the zone.  Changeup was straight at thrown for a strike at 74-77. High follow 2019.
