2022 MLB Draft Leauge: Strong track record of hitting at Pitt before injuries limited him to 29 games in '22. Scouts really like his left-handed bat and the power potential he was beginning to tap into early in '22.

Polished LHH who is a mainstay in the middle of the order. Swing plays to any part of the strike zone. Smooth, easy swing. Connection between the lower and upper body. Stats aren't where you would like to see them but he is talented. Can run a little bit and has a good arm from RF.

4/11/18 Another game day and another round of extra batting practice in front of pro scouts. Hess has and will continue to hit before or after nearly every game this spring for scouts in attendance. On this date the Pitt commit showcased his pop by hitting half a dozen wood bat home runs in early BP. The stroke is uphill at contact and results in plenty of back spinned fly balls. During game action Hess missed a couple of barrels on soft contact to shortstop and first base while also walking twice.

2/12/17 6-foot, 180-pound Pittsburgh commit ran a laser-timed 6.44 60-yard dash. Left-handed hitter continues to put on strength and is flashing improved bat speed to the tune of a 97 mph exit velocity. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Hands work well, appears more comfortable driving the baseball the opposite way, and is getting a feel for creating backspin. Continues to show an accurate arm, while arm strength continues to improve (now up to 86 mph).

2/14/16 6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitter has plenty of fast-twitch projectability to his actions. Sophomore has recently closed his stance considerably and shortened his stride to take advantage of above average hands. Additional work to clear his lower half to allow his hands to work freely should lead to additional power potential. Hess registered an 89 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 6.70 60-yard dash. The sophomore moves well defensively and displayed 82 mph arm strength from the outfield.

11/7/15 Hess stood out, or, more accurately, ran to the head of the class, with a blazing 6.64 60-yard dash. The 6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitter starts from an open stance and strides to slightly closed. His hands work and he keeps his head still throughout his swing. Has some strength in his wrists and forearms that helped generate an 86-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he exhibited a nice, short arm action and his throws of 83-mph traveled true with carry. As a freshman, Hess was one of only two underclass starters on the Indians' PIAA Class AAA state semifinal squad.

9/13/15 6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from wide open stance and strides to square. Takes a fairly short path to the baseball and flashes some bat speed. Has a pre-swing bat waggle that creates hand rhythm, but can occasionally cause him to be late if he doesn't get loaded on time. Ran a 7.00 60-yard dash and posted an 82-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased accurate 80-mph arm strength with some carry.

5/28/15 Solid defensive actions with good carry on throws during in/out. Sound left-handed set up at plate from an open stance. Toe tap stride to closed with some arm bar action that can be corrected. Turned on inside fastball for triple to get extra-inning rally started for his club and showed above average foot speed rounding the bags (4.56 on the turn).
