2013 Top 30 Ranked Prospects

School is back in session, 2012’s are verbally committing, and college coaches are now turning their attention to the 2013 class. The 2013 class has been defined by two of the rarest positions on the field; catchers and left handed pitchers. Lefty Trey Ball (New Castle), ranked number one in the 2013 class, is a 6-foot-6 inch LHP full of projectability, already touching 93 mph with his fastball.   Josh Rogers (New Albany), another lefty ranked number four, is a big time arm with a high ceiling. He sits anywhere from 84-90 mph with his fastball and also features one of the better breaking balls in the class. Daniel Ayers (Columbus North) and Tanner Tully (Elkhart Central) also crack the top 10 as left handed pitchers. Both were touching 85 mph at the Under Armour Midwest Future’s Games, and displayed plus breaking balls. With three other lefty’s in the top 30; Brian Wichman (Columbus East), Trent Astle (Jeffersonville), and Ryan Thurston (Madison) all touching 85 mph, it should be a position that will receive a ton of attention throughout the upcoming season.

Right handed pitchers that are long and lean are a common theme in the top 30 of the 2013 class. Zak Ryan (Andrean) is the number 2 ranked prospect, at 6-feet, and 170 pounds.  Ryan has been as high as 91 mph and made a name for himself last winter at the Super 60 when his first pitch touched 90 in front of 57 Major League Baseball scouts, GMs and agents. Parker Dunshee (Zionsville) is another high ceiling righty with a quick arm sitting 85-87 mph. Dunshee is currently ranked number 7 in the 2013 class. Michael Poulos (Munster) is as projecatble as they come in the 2013 class. He is 6-feet-5 inches tall with long legs and long arms.  At the Under Armour Midwest Futures Games he was an 83-84, touching 85.Justin Curry (McCutcheon) is another highly projectable righty who might actually end up being the hardest throwing righty in the class.

Behind the plate, the depth is tremendous in the 2013 class. Dylan Jones (Avon), Austin Sparks (Cathedral), Isaac Crafton (Jeffersonville),Austin Shultz (Greensburg), and Jayden Jackson (Greenfield Central) make this an exciting class behind the plate. Anyone of these guys could emerge as the top catcher in the state by the end of the year.

While LHP’s and Catchers are the crème of the crop in the 2013 class rankings, positional players are made up of a good mix. It is a class full of potential, with Hamilton Southeastern’s Wes Edrington leading the way. Edrington is a smooth fielding shortstop that does a little bit of everything. He picks it well up the middle and has a strong arm.  He runs well, hits for a high average, and has surprisingly good pop.  Sam Sampen(Brownsburg) and Curtiss Irving (Greenfield Central) will lead the way on the corners with both being prototypical power hitting corner infielders. Sampen possesses a smooth left handed swing while Irving possesses more of a true power hitter’s swing.

The outfield is lead by the top positional player in the class Nolan Rogers (Bloomington South). Rogers is a polished, hard throwing left handed swinging outfielder with a good body.  Not far behind is the speedy Alex Krupa (Greenwood).  Krupa is a 6.5 runner that hits from the left side and throws well. Krupa can play both second base and outfield, but projects more as an outfielder. His athleticism alone puts him as a potential top 10 player. Troy Montgomery (Mt. Vernon) and Josh Van Meter (Norwell) also crack the top 30 prospects.  Montgomery is a hard-nosed gamer, while Van Meter is quickly rising up the ranks after his impressive spring.

The class rankings are one of the most exciting parts of working for Prep Baseball Report, but at the same time one of the most difficult parts of the job. A lot of work goes into scouting and projecting the players and then ranking them by class.  While there will always be controvercy over which players should be ranked and where they are ranked, we are happy to release our latest 2013 Top 30 ranked players in the state of Indiana.
