Alberta Insider - 2022 Alberta Rankings 

With positive vibes and fingers crossed for good news on the horizon, we take a look at our first edition on the 2022 rankings in Alberta. 

Now with the summer we’ve had, we were lucky enough to get a couple events in and take a look at some workouts but still really haven’t got the exact feel you would want from maybe the most important class in the province. These players will be the ones representing Alberta at the Canada Cup (as long as they are from here and not a victory lap player) and is an important year for making an impact on the recruiting trail for college coaches. 

We are proud to bring to you our first annual 2022 Alberta rankings and look forward to adding and adjusting over the next few months as we get out to workouts and host our events. 


NUMBER 1

At the top is right-handed Conor Pote. Pote is a long and lean righty who stands every bit of 6-foot-7, and is committed to Oregon State. We didn’t get to see much of Pote in 2020 with the pandemic and he was battling some minor injuries, but the stuff, body, and ceiling is something you just don’t get to see everyday from a Canadian high schooler. He has had to work hard to refine and repeat his delivery with his size and growth over the past couple of years, and we really saw what Pote could do at the Canada Cup in 2019 as well Tournament 12. Pote is healthy now and look for him to come out with a presence and purpose early in 2021. 

 

TOP TEN

Lots of arms in the top 10 with right-handers in Boston Warkentin, Matthew Grabmann, Logan Rumberg and Drew Lenehan all cracking the Top 10. Warkentin, originally from BC is a Washington commit and may have the best breaking ball in this class while Grabmann put away his hockey skates and has made some noise early on the mound and has committed to Oregon.

 Rumberg is a skinny right-hander who is going to add size and uses a short action while running his fastball in the mid to upper 80’s. It has a chance to really take the next step and expect his numbers to trend up. Lenehan is a highly projectable righty where as Rumberg, is going to have a chance to gain lots of strength and will really add to the pure stuff he has. It’s a clean arm and there is lots of room for him to get more out of his body and delivery. 

 

The top position player in the class is left-handed hitting Max Hartman. The outfielder is an athlete who has an efficient lefty stroke that is going to hit and has a chance to tap into some power as he matures. He’s grown physically over the last year and the Washington State commit fits the profile as someone who can do a lot of things on both sides of the ball. 

 

The other bats in the Top 10 are left-handed hitters in Kayden Hleucka and Nicolas Fortin. Hleucka has a smooth left-handed swing that has a knack for performing in game and collecting multiple hits every time we see him. Fortin is a Louisiana Monroe commit and is a physical catcher who looks the part with a strong lower half and ability to get to some pull side power. 

 

The last two of the Top Ten to talk about is two-way player Jack Wheatley who comes in at number 5 in the rankings and Cody Hendriks who follows Wheatley at 6. Wheatley stands at 6-foot-3, 170-pounds and also looks the part on the mound with a short, compact stroke and ability to pound the zone. The actions defensively and the athleticism Wheatley brings, along with the upside that will come being an athlete when the frame fills out should make him a very strong follow early on this spring for college coaches to lock in on. Hendriks is a Cal State Bakersfield commit and brings offensive prowess with a strong 6-foot-1 frame that produces bat speed and can play the left side of the infield. He has also ran it up to 88 mph on the mound. 

 

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW

Jose Nunez RHP / SS / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 11 / POS: 6

Report: Right-hander with a quick arm and ability to spin the baseball. He moves well on the mound and the arm speed mixed with his ability to attack make him an intriguing righty to pay attention to and follow. 

Adam Vulcano OF / 3B / Vauxhall , AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 13 / POS: 2

Report: We like what we saw from Vulcano in the fall and he's added some size and strength to his frame over the winter. It's athletic with some quick twitch and the family history doesn't hurt either. There is bat to ball skills and we believe there is more athleticism to come. Expect for Vulcano to keep getting better. 

Luke Wilson OF / C / Sir Winston Churchill, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 15 / POS: 4

Report: Some of the most left-handed juice in the province, we like the bat and think there is going to be some in-game power this year. The power is ahead of the hit, and it is still not decided where he ends on the other side of the ball, but Wilson has options and the bat is going to be the carrying tool regardless. 

Nick Hagen C / 2B / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 18 / POS: 2

Report: Hagen impressed at our open event in Lethbridge with his smooth stroke from the left side and what he can bring behind the dish. It is a bat first profile with Hagen but we believe there is enough there for him to stick behind the plate. As the arm gets stronger and the bat gets more refined, Hagen is someone that should be on your follow list. 

Gavin Galenza C / RHP / St Joseph, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 19 / POS: 3

Report: Galenza stands out with the arm strength both on the mound and behind the plate. There is no doubt that Galenza can throw and we expect him to continue to work as a two-way player heading into the 2021 season. The bat has some work but we think that is going to catch up and he c has the opportunity and ability to make some big strides this year. 

THE NEXT JUMP

Jaxon Zanolli LHP / 1B / St. Joseph, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 20 / POS: 1

Report: The left arm of Zanolli needs to be focused on and although there is some funk, it works and looks to be deceiving to hitters in the box. Zanolli has the size and actions to make these jumps and is someone we are excited to see once we are allowed to do so. 

Mathieu Morin OF / C / Bellerose Composite, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 26 / POS: 7

Report: Morin impressed both times we saw him in 2020 and there is athleticism to his game and bpdy while he has the IQ and mobility to work behind the plate. The bat is line drive oriented and you don't get much wasted actions with Morin. He's a pick to click this year and excited to see the gains he has made. 

Jack Hudson RHP / 2B / St. Albert Catholic, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 25 / POS: 9

Report: We really liked the way Hudson attacked and used three pitches in his pen at Lethbridge in the summer while the path was short and he was able to use angles and work in the zone. There is arm speed to work with and if the body gets stronger and he makes a jump, you can bet the stuff will too. 

Karter Andersen RHP / OF / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2022

Rankings  StateRank: 24 / POS: 8

Report: Anderson is big, long, and has a lot of project-ability in the 6-foot-4 frame that will fill out and only add to his stuff. The arm works and once he syncs himself up, the stuff should make a jump. He already has a feel for the strike zone to go along with some spin. A definite guy to make sure you stay on and follow into 2021.
