Lets take a look into the 4A…

2021 Recap

Last year, we saw two undefeated powerhouse teams in Sherwood and Severna Park lock horns and face off in the State Championship game. Seven innings were not enough for these two juggernauts, as the game went into the eighth inning tied at 4 a piece. 2023 Ryan Bouma came to the plate in the top of the eighth and laced a double to center field, scoring 2022 Nico Pernie to give the Warriors a 5-4 lead. 2022 Steven Tameris slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning, capping off the undefeated season for Sherwood.

This season, the 4A classification is once again loaded with talent, with multiple teams eyeing a state championship run. In our Preseason Power 25, we have nine 4A schools in our rankings, with Urbana and Sherwood headlining the list at numbers 2 and 4 respectively.

Walter Johnson Quince Orchard
Walt Whitman Seneca Valley
Wootton Urbana

Notes

The 4A West is one of the deepest and talented regions across the Old Line State once again in 2022. In Region I, Churchill returns a plethora of key players led by two-way standout Christopher Hacopian (Wake Forest), who will look to lead the Bulldogs in defending their Region title... Bethesda-Chevy Chase boasts a serious threat to Churchill, with Senior two-way Beck Urofsky (Cornell) leading the charge on both sides of the ball and Senior Dylan Friebert (Frostburg State) adding a nice one-two punch on the bump... Walt Whitman possesses one of the deepest rosters in the region, led by two-way Junior Liam Bowen (Frostburg State). Look for a breakout season from uncommitted Junior righty Lion Gardiner on the bump for the Vikings... Wootton will look to Seniors Rob Carpenter (Rochester Institute of Technology) and James Walsh (Coast Guard) to lead the charge offensively, with big seasons ahead for uncommitted Senior outfielder Brady Weiss and Senior right-handed pitcher Liam Miller... Walter Johnson also brings back a ton of key pieces, led by two uncommitted standouts in outfielder Rayan Nair and right-handed pitcher Leo Simpson

Region II will be intriguing to watch all year long, with Urbana leading the charge heading into 2022. The Urbana Hawks contain the most depth, led by their starting rotation with the likes of Brendan Yagesh (Mount St. Mary's), Keegan Johnson (Ball State), and Eli Derossi-Cytron. Look for a breakout season from uncommitted outfielder Riley Smith as well... Northwest will undoubtedly compete this season, led by Senior righty Josh Zuckerman (Emory) and two-way standout Jayden Brown (Clemson)... Clarksburg will also be interesting to watch, led by uncommitted catcher Oliver Martin and right-handed pitcher Daerek Sawyer (Stevenson)... Look for uncommitted catcher Cameron Patt to lead Quince Orchard this season, with other pieces vying to keep QO in the conversation.

Region I Region II
Catonsville Blake
Dulaney Blair
Dundalk Einstein
Parkville Northwood
Perry Hall Paint Branch
Mergenthaler Sherwood

Wheaton

Notes

Region I contains a ton of parity in 2022, with Dulaney being the team to beat once again this season. Two-way Matthew Dow and outfielder John Kirstukas are players to keep an eye on for the Lions... Parkville has a serious chance to give Dulaney all they can handle in the region, led by the likes of two-way Gavin Bigelow (Wilson) and outfielder Anthony D'Alfonso... The loss of Josh Tingler (Gardner-Webb) hurts for Catonsville, but look for their younger players to make a splash in 2022. With that being said, we still look for Dulaney to take the crown in Region I.

Region II will be led by Sherwood once again in 2022. The defending 4A state champions boasts a deep and talented lineup, with the likes of uncommitted infielder Ryan Bouma and outfielder Brian Scott (Maryland) leading the offensive onslaught. Look for big seasons from Jack Andre, Josh Hollowell, Niko Pernie, Jake Shalvi, and Luke Weichel as well. Steven Tameris (Frostburg State) is another name to watch on the bump for the Warriors... Blake looks to give Sherwood a run across Region II, with the likes of Tanner Sanderoff, Evan Cawthorne, and Andrew Gload leading the way... Blair will be interesting to watch, led by Aidan Niemerski (Catawba Valley CC) and uncommitted left-handed pitcher Emmanuel Kraft... Paint Branch will also be a team to keep eyes on, led by uncommitted outfielder Gabriel Ruiz... Uncommitted Junior two-way Cole Williams will lead the charge for Wheaton, making them competitive throughout the region. With talented players throughout Region II, and some interesting uncommitted players to see, we still believe Sherwood will come out on top in Region II this season.

4A South

Region I Region II
Bladensburg Bowie
DuVal CH Flowers
High Point Henry A. Wise
Laurel Eleanor Roosevelt
Northwestern (PG) Suitland
Parkdale

Notes

Region I looks to be wide open this year, with Laurel being the team to beat, as they won the region just a year ago... Parkdale and Duval looks to give Laurel a run throughout the season, with an intriguing Northwestern team hot on their heals to capture the Region I title. With that being said, look for Laurel to repeat in 2022.

In Region II, we believe it's going to be a three team race through the entirety of the season with Roosevelt, CH Flowers and Bowie battling it out. Uncommitted Senior Lamon Lyles and two-way Shane Murphy will be names to keep tabs on throughout the season for Roosevelt, with uncommitted catcher Matthew May and two-way Raymond Smith (UMES) leading the way for CH Flowers. Bowie loses Khalil Greene (Louisburg JC), but returns a plethora of players with experience which should bode well for success this season. With that being said, we believe CH Flowers possesses the most depth on both sides of the ball, so we will pick them to knock off the defending champions, Roosevelt.

Notes

In our eyes, it's a three team race to take home the Region I crown with Arundel, North County, and Old Mill battling it out. Arundel is deep on both sides of the ball, with Senior leadership spread throughout. Seniors Corbin Warner (Navy), Christopher Beatty (Messiah), and Jake Long (Wilson) are names to keep an eye on, with uncommitted Senior Brendan Sweeney and uncommitted Junior Gary Gubbings III poised to have big seasons... North County is will be intriguing to watch, led by the likes of two-ways Thor Hildebrand and Braxton Hurley... Old Mill showcases a ton of depth on both sides of the ball, led by uncommitted Senior Maison Beam. Uncommitted Junior Cristian Bonilla, Ty Jacoby and Connor Newman are also names to keep an eye on. The depth and experience on Arundel will pay dividends, therefore we're picking them to be the team to beat.

Region II is loaded with talent with four teams leading the way. Severna Park has played in two of the last three state championships and looked poised to make it all the way once again. The loss of Jackson Merrill (San Diego Padres) is a big hit, however the experience on both sides of the ball should bode well. Colton Adams (Bryant), Luke Herz, Tucker McDonough (New York), Seamus Patenaude and Angel Santiago-Cruz are big names to keep eyes on this season and look to lead the Falcons to another Region title... Broadneck possesses leadership at the top, led by Nick Stergiou (CCBC Catonsville) and Sean Murphy... South River is intriguing, with Parker Black, Aiden Cassilly and Braeden Ford headlining a deep roster on both sides of the ball... Leonardtown will look to add some competition to the mix, with Senior catcher Derek Zumpano leading the way. Look for big seasons and contributions from Sean Foster, Aaron Wathen, and Matthew Guy. With a ton of parity in Region II, we're still going to pick Severna Park to take the region, as the experience and depth in the roster should continue to program's success.
