2022 Spring Team Preview: New Boston Huron

NEW BOSTON - A year ago New Boston Huron gave Orchard Lake St. Mary’s its toughest tournament test, losing 5-1 in the Division 2 state semifinals. With most of that squad back and Orchard Lake moving up to D-1, the Chiefs enter the 2022 campaign as the favorites in D-2 in the eyes of many.

“We only lost a few players from last year’s team,” pointed out head coach Phil Yancey, who has led the program to a 94-54 record over the past six years. “We have a handful of pitchers, we just have to make sure the right guy is throwing in the right game.”

A pair of juniors, Gavin Moczydlowsky and Luke Coll, who had the top fastballs at the recent Michigan Procase, headline a staff that also includes sophomore Micah Smith, who has topped out at 88.4. Coll threw 94 at the PBR Procase event and Moczydlowsky 92.

A Michigan State commit ranked fifth among Michigan 2023 right-handed pitchers, Moczydlowsky was hurt in the first game last spring season and missed the year while Coll, an uncommitted 6-2 185-pounder, threw minimal innings in 2021.

“Our fourth and fifth pitchers are sitting 81-84, so that’s our strongest suit,” Yancey said of pitching depth that includes southpaws Xavier Elliott, a Divine Child transfer, and Kyle Kantola along with right-hander Cole Grunwald. “Our pitching has gotten stronger and I believe our hitting is stronger.”

Matt Williams will move from right field to center to anchor the outfield.

“He’s fast and has a good bat,” Yancey noted about Williams, who hit .390 a year ago. “He’s a game changer.”

Senior Shane Mitchell and junior Rory Callahan will play corner outfield positions with depth provided by Tyler Ramsby and Kantola

Grunwald, an Alma commit who pitched a perfect game in the regional final last year against Livonia Clarenceville, then hit for the cycle a game later in the quarterfinals versus Trenton, is slated to play shortstop with Moczydlowsky filling the position when Grunwald is on the mound. Moczydlowsky is also projected to play first base with Wyatt Marentette, another that could fill in at the position.

Jayden Morse is back to play second base after hitting .350 while making just one error as a junior. Morse and Smith can also play third base with infield depth provided by Rambsy and sophomore Nate Morse, the younger brother of Jayden.

Sophomore Connor Grant will take over the catching position with Jacob Handyside, another 10th grader, also in the mix behind the plate for a program that in 2019 won its second district title in school history and followed that up with a state championship last season.
